Any reason this wont work. Trans dipstick

After having no luck finding a 904 dipstick and tube at a reasonable price. I though why not use my 727 rube and reposition the bracket.

Here is my rough idea using jb weld after the bracket popped off. I figure I can tack weld it on.

Any reason to believe the 727 dipstick would provide an inaccurate reading?

Thinking out loud..... I'd want the correct dipstick , sure would suck destroying all your efforts by not having the right amount of fluid in it?

If you bought a universal dipstick, you'd have to mark the "full" level on your own anyway.  Just make sure to do the same with this 727 dipstick.  Add the amount of trans fluid the factory calls for and take the car for a drive.  When the fluid is hot, double check the fluid level.  If it doesn't match the full line on the dipstick, mark the new/correct level...done.

I don't like the factory dipsticks, they don't seem to seal very well.  I grabbed a used one off of a junk mini-van.  It's a lot longer then stock but the handle part has a nicer seal that goes down deeper inside the tube.  I'll have to do the same thing...add the factory correct amount of fluid and mark the new full level on the stick.

Thanks @Brads70   ...I was looking at that part, problem is it is $79.95 at my local speed shop.  Seems kind a pricy. 

But I agree, I really don't want to destroy the trans on such a trivial thing.

I bought that same Dipstick for my 904 (when i had it) from Mancini racing...i think it also was 49.95 Plus shipping.   It sealed a lot better than the stock one did....

I asked my Mopar mechanic and am just waiting on him to get back to me. We're both pretty busy, him at his shop and I've been on the road a lot lately. As soon as I hear from him I'll let you know if he's got one; maybe a day or two.

Well, I should have checked my emails before posting.

He said he might but not 100% sure. I got the gist that he's going to look harder tomorrow.

do you have the factory 500/518 dipstick ?
you should be able to compare the distance & get close if you do .

no my 500 did not come with a dipstick tube.

The 500 and 518 came in trucks originally.  They have a differently shaped dipstick tube to get around the trucks frame rail.  The corresponding stick is longer which wouldn't line up with the factory 904 stick.

that is what I figured.  I thought if I could adapt my 727 to fit, it might be accurate and save me another $80.  Alternatively I thought a 904 tube from an e-body might work, but no one seem to have one.

Pending what @Jay Bee  comes back with I might just bite the bullet and spend the $80.

A 904 tube should work.  The extra fluid capacity in a 500 is in the depth of the pan.  The factory used an aluminum extension on the filter to lower it to the bottom of the deeper 500 pan.  The "full" level is probably really close or the same as the "full" level on a 904.  However, that's why I suggested to add the factory amount of fluid, get the trans up to temperature and check where the level sits.

@Burdar thanks.  I will do that.  Funny I do not recall there being and extension on the filter???  Might have to go back and check my pics and make sure I did not miss it.
