I've been running a hughes whiplash cam in a low compression 78, 440 with 906 iron heads and hp manifolds.
The smell of unburnt gas is finally getting to me. The engine runs good and I contacted hughes to get there opinion on cam change that dosent smell and gets ok performance. I have no experience on cams or what the numbers really mean. 1st is whiplash and 2nd is the recommend. What do you engine guys think?

Increasing the lobe separation to 110 will definatly help , the 107 is more of a race cam

I would listen to their sales/tech guys. The are knowledgable and great help if you don't know what you need. I got one of their cams and I was afraid it would b a little too much but it seems perfect. I still have to drive it around so I will make the final determination then.

Are you sure the smell of gas is related to the cam and not the carb or spark? I assume it is running ok  since you didn't mention it wasn't. Does it bog or anything when accelerating?

The whiplash cam is a hyd flat tappet.
Should I stay with another hyd flat tappet or cam or use something different, better? I'm trying to keep everything else the same.

Cratos

if your smelling unburnt fuel, try re-jetting your carb before you spend all the time and $ to change your cam!!
