How are the members thoughts on comp cam shafts ?  engine 340 just finish rebuild run cam in .seemed ok .Took car to dyno to bed rings in . my engine builder has done many engines .But for some reason a lifter collapsed and looks like the cams is gone . I know there could be many reasons why this has happen . I read somewhere that the materials they use to grind cams these days is poor . Is it possible the springs are to hard or heavy for my application .Had all rebuilt 69 -340 X Heads small flat tapped  :dunno:

The very same thing just happened to my son. Many failures with Comp Cams and lifters these days. I have no idea what is any good these days however. Myself I wouldn't build a flat tappet cam engine now.

It is not just Comp Cams its a widespread issue with flat tappet cams and lifters regardless of brand. A lot of people moving towards rollers for that reason.

Chryco Psycho

Comp did you a favor kind of , now you can put in a real cam .
Most failures are due to changes in oil additives / lack of ZDDP , you need SJ or SL oil at a minimum

I have heard a lot of comments about the quality of steel, but I am suspect. I would think cam manufacturers would test the metal before they would send them out and risk lawsuits. I know a lot of items are of inferior quality but I would suspect the steel would bee good enough. Cams go through a lot of stress, but I think thee steel is good enough plus if the steel was bad, we should see lots of cams in a batch fail.

I agree with Chryco that the likely culprit is lubrication or even some issue in the lifter bores.I out in a Hughes Cam and they guarantee the cam so long as you follow their process and use the products they recommend. Not sure if they get special sticks with better metal or not. But they stand behind a good install. I could be totally wrong on this, but this is my current take. LOL.

I'm no engineer expert or metals expert but I tend to agree with tparker. Why would a company accept metal that is not of sufficient quality to do the job? I'm sure they're not just taking whatever steel comes along without some assurance of the quality of that steel. To put out a poor quality product that will not stand up to the task risks earning a poor reputation which runs counter to staying in business. I have trouble believing that they run their business in such a willy nilly fashion.

If memory serves, I believe Comp offers a for-a-fee, nitriding process for their FT cams. Worth a look maybe? Your problem is why I went with a Lunati roller and so far, so good. Good luck  :bigthumb:
