Car won’t start

But the cable ran full 12V up t the starter.  :notsure:

Bullitt-

  Volts are one thing.. a tiny wire can carry 12V.. It's the high amperage demand the starter puts on the circuit that a faulty connection (think corroded battery post) or bad cable that can't deliver what's needed......  Could be internal starter issue I suppose.

I don't know if you've tried this:

Put the car in Neutral if standard or park if auto, turn your key to the OFF position, go under the hood and using a screwdriver (or better a remote starter button switch) and use it as an arc (screwdriver method) between the SOL and BAT metal terminals on the Relay, if it cranks the starter, it's likely fine unless it's drawing to much Amperage.

If the Starter is OK, then the problem is somewhere between the Relay and your Ignition Switch, my bet is the Ignition Switch or one of the Plastic Connectors going from it to the Fuse Harness.

I cleaned the battery terminals and the two main connections on the relay. Tried to cross them and had nothing. I put the test light on the battery and nothing. Dead battery. So I hook up the charger so I can cross the relay and I get this moderately loud humming from the starter area. I stop the cross but it keeps humming! Shut off charger and positive cable is really warm, as in a small amount of smoke. Whoops, had charger on 40 amps! I'm standing there pondering this and I here a click. So I'm guessing the solenoid stuck on and the click was it releasing. The engine never did try to turn over. I'll give it a 10 amp try and get back to you.

Got the humming on 10amps too. In both cases the engine did not try to turn over.

Did you leave the ignition on at some point and drain the battery? Or is the battery the cause of the issues?

The humming is because your charger wouldn't have the juice to turn over the engine and so the starter just sits there and hums. Let it charge over night.

I did not leave the key on. I will swap out the battery with the one in my Charger, Dodge not battery, and see what happens.

Please at least wear goggles, gloves and do this outside. Batteries can be very explosive. We had a vehicle towed into the shop many years ago and thought it had a dead battery. The technician wiggles the battery cable and the battery exploded. Internal short. Lucky we required safety gear when working around batteries.
When charging use the lowest amp setting. Like cooking steak.
Low temp, long time cooks it completely. High temp short time just burns the outside and leaves the inside raw.
Connections, connections, connections. Check and clean and tighten. Only jump a dead battery to start a car in an emergency to move vehicle. Always use an external battery charger, never try to charge it with your cars alternator. That is not what they are designed to do.

At first i would say as the others : bad connections. But may be a cable at the starter is grounded on something (could be on manifold -happened to me once) when you turn it on (maybe the starter is a bit loose)

I swapped in the battery out of the Charger and the car fired right up. So glad I don't have to pull the starter. Thanks for the help guys.

You've had that car forever, any idea how old the battery is.
Glad it turned out to be a simple solution.

It went in in 2014. I'm suprised at all the nuances a low battery caused. I talked to the shop where I'm getting the new one and he said a dead cell can cause a battery to still have 12V but not much current which is why the solenoid would only click and the motor didn't turn over.
