How much additional spacing between stock/common aftermarket intakes and the carb is too much and effects driveabilty ?  Was daydreaming and thought of this.   :D

Difficult question , by increasing the plenum size there is more volume of air often very helpful at higher RPM but it depends how big the plenum is now & how big the engine is in CI .
I ran an STR 14 on a 440 with a massive plenum , it sucked , it made the same power as the Team G intake but the air flow got lost inside & puddled fuel inside the plenum .

I am not qualified to answer this, however, I will.  They are easy to swap out and at least they used to be pretty cheap. I think I recall about an inch or so. I think I ran with that back in the day but I can't actually recall.

Though if everything is stock, there could be more important things to get more performance, depending what you have. Not sure I noticed a huge gain with mine. But this was 30 years ago. Maybe I'll let you know when I get my new motor put back in this spring. :)

There is also the variables of open vs 4 hole vs the modern venturi bottom types that all will produce different results on different intake configurations with different carb sizes.  Like many things related to engine performance, there is no one set answer for this.

Of course, hood clearance is also a factor for a street driven vehicles that  the owner does not want to modify the hood.
