I'm in the middle of changing from the plain 4 blade fan to a clutch fan. Are the clutches all basically the same? Would there be a reason why one of mine would have more resistance than another? I know I should probably buy a new one but I'm on a tight budget right now.

Newer ones or HD units will have more resistance .

It was mated to a larger fan. Okay to put it on my 318 or that defeats the purpose?

If it is tighter it will work better , even if it doesn't declutch as much it will still be far better than a rigid fan

There are several different lengths of the clutch assemblies. Be sure to check the distance between the radiator core and the forward face surface of your water pump pulley.
This will tell you how much room you have to work with.
