Coolant Flow

Yah, I think when the cooling problems started popping up, people measured the housings and saw how small they were internally.  They automatically assumed that was the issue.  I think I read that it ended up being the pump...not the housing that was the issue.  That was a few years ago so they probably have it fix now.

Radiator works. Just flushed it. Only thing left to check is maybe a blockage in the motor or the water pump has ceased to work. Those are the only other options. I guess I'll go buy a water pump and put it all back together.

Could a messed up heater core install cause the issue?

I would not think so because there are some cars that got the heater deleted all together and it doesn't really affect the engine running.

Replaced the water pump and thermostat. I filled up the radiator with water and let it idle until the thermostat opened. When it opened I topped off the radiator and let it run for a while with the cap off. I'll go back today and replace with antifreeze and call it good. Top of the radiator still gets too hot to touch and the fan clutch never disengages, but I don't know what else to fix. I'll pick up some wiring this week and install the new temp gage just to be sure. Thanks for the suggestions and the troubleshooting help.

This install turned out better than my intake gasket debacle.

Top of the radiator should be hot, right?  That is normal I would would think.  Especially aluminum as it should get rid of heat better.

Maybe it's supposed to be that way. Makes sense that it's whatever temp the coolant is...in this case 160 degrees. I still can't see it moving when the thermostat opens and the clutch fan stays on. I wouldn't think that a brand new clutch fan is defective.

Top tank is generally the hottest part as that is where the hot water arrives first & it can be well above T stat temp as that is just the opening temp point , the t stat can be wide open all the time if the cooling system will not bring it down to that temp . clutch fan wil never let the fan stop but will tighten up & work harder if hot air is coming from the rad , on the highway where the fan is not needed it will spin at air speed to prevent blocking air flow

If that's the case, then everything seems to be working properly. I need to go ahead and wire up the new temp gauge to be sure.

Reviving my old thread.

Lots of things have happened in the last few years. I'll update my fix thread once I get this cooling issue sorted out once and for all.

I think I narrowed down what the issue was to begin with...Thermostat not flowing enough coolant at highway speed when it opens, then it collapses the lower radiator hose.


Right now, I've got prestone cooling system treatment in it to get rid of some crud in the block. When I get home tonight, I'm going to flush that out, replace the lower radiator hose with a reinforced flex hose (https://www.summitracing.com/parts/dac-81341) and drill some holes in the thermostat until I can get this delivered (https://www.summitracing.com/parts/mil-16406/overview/). There's only so much more that I can do.

That's the only other thing I know to do. Radiator and water pump are both good, so that leaves me here.
