Am thinking of building the 440 I have. It in bits.

Found the end caps.

Can I media blast them to clean them up. Would use glass. They got surface rust. Not on area where crank goes.

Thanks

I don't see an issue, you could always try a liquid rust remover...or even muriatic acid maybe ?
I've taught you everything you know....but I haven't taught you everything I know....

Cover the area where the brg sits & where it mates to the block for sure , unless you plan to align bore it which could be a good idea anyway .

Thanks guys for the replies.  :bigthumb: . I will cover the 2 spots you mention .

I will definitely get an align bore done.

I help out at a High School and have asked the teacher in charge of the Automotive class if I can sit in and learn about building engines. He said yes so I thought I had better check out what I have got and what needs to be done.
I will start an engine build thread. Bound to have lots of questions.

Cover the bearing surface with duct tape and blast it.

What I would do:
Blast the caps.
Align hone the mains
Then measure the main bearings with caps torques and compare to the crank to ensure proper clearance.

Bottom line, don't be afraid to blast the caps clean.
