I'm trying to hook up the rubber hose from the gas tank sending unit to the hard line. However, it looks like the fuel line has a giant flare on it. I was only able to get less than 1/2 inch on. Any ideas about this flare? It looks like it is expecting to mate with something rather than have a rubber hose attached. It is a 3/8 line.

I always create a flare at the end of hard lines to stop the rubber hose from sliding off of the end , that one may be a bit more severe than the ones I do but that is why it is there , , use some lube & slide it over with a clamp behind the flare .

Yep, somebody made an oversized double flare, if you have enough line you could cut it and re flare it correctly. You can also make a single flare, just make sure you round all the edge`s, like Chryco said, the flare is only to keep the hose from vibrating off, the clamp is the seal.

Be careful that you buy good hose. A bubble that large has a tendency to crack the rubber hose that is forced over it. It is a fuel line after all.

That flare looks pretty typical of all the reproduction lines, I just use lube when pushing the new hoses on. If you're using the crimp type clamps, put the clamp on the steel line first, then push the hose on, and slide the clamp on the hose after the hose has past the flare.

Thanks all. Yeah, it just looks like a giant flair. I'll lube 'er up and push it on.

Technically, that's half of a double flare and yet not a single flare.   While lube is always a good idea, taking a heat gun and warming up the hose before trying to jam it over that flare will make your life a wee bit easier, too.
