You put it in neutral going down the road and it glides down the road smoothly, pop it back in gear and you can feel it engage.

So,  I think I am going to learn how to rebuild a transmission this winter.

Jason
And was the tach is nice and steady @2500rpm while gliding in neutral as well?

I was going down hill and off the gas...the surge went away as soon as I hit neutral.  The tach is steady the entire time.

I'm wondering if the kickdown lever is in a bind or something like that............

I am using an aftermarket kick down cable...the adjustment has not changed.

If your surge went away as soon as you went into neutral, that really doesn't determine if it is engine or trans related if you let off the gas. You took them both out of the equation at the same time.

When I let off the gas and go light throttle to slow down it surges, even if I let off the throttle completely going down the highway it surges. The only time it did not surge was in Neutral.

That seems to indicate the trans...

went out for a spin today just to see what it would do...same deal.

Looks like its time to pull the trans.

My total for the season, a rousing 400 miles.    :dunno:

Now to decide if I go for an A518 or just back to the to 727.

Well, your doing better than me on distance.
I have driven about 200 miles and never went to any car shows this summer.

Sorry to hear about all the problems you've had with your car this year.
I'm sure next summer you car will be grooving to the cruising.
Someone from this forum posted this online.  Not sure you had seen it yet.

If I had an automatic I would be switching to a 518 even if I had a perfectly functioning 727. More gears = more better. :alan2cents:

Hey guys,

Just wanted to follow up on this thread.

I am in the midst of a A500 rebuild and install, and today started to remove my 727.

I dropped the pan and here is what I found.

Now keep in mind that I had this pan off a few years ago to replace the filter and a few seals and have a max of 2000 miles on it since then.

I get the feeling the car was slipping because the trans was at the end of its life!!  What do ya think @BIGSHCLUNK

I am not sure what that big pile of silver stuff is in the middle of the pan?!?!?

Wow , 2000 miles & that much metal , yikes

Yep...of course its a 40 year old trans that has likely never been touched (at least not in the time I have owned it....1991.)

That is the worst pile of metal filings i have ever seen !!   That transmission needs more than just clutches and seals, your going to have to replace a lot of stuff... or replace the entire transmission!!   I'm just finishing up going the A518 route...    Its a lot of work !   Big and heavy...  But ill be able to cruise 75 at 2500 rpm...!!

What is that thing?

@blown motor that is the magnet in the pan. Its there to collect metal shavings so they do not get back in the trans.

Some metal is normal, but not like that!!!

Yeah its pretty bad. That trans is not going back in, but I may take it apart just to see how bad it is!
