I need to move the motor and trans over about 3/8 of an inch to center the trans and driveline. Can I loosen the k member bolts and get some play.I was thinking of using a racket strap.Any ideas out there. Thanks

The K Frame bolts have a shoulder on them to center the K Frame   You're not going to get any side-to-side movement. :alan2cents:

The drive lines were intentionally off center from the factory. This was to create room for 1) drivers feet to access pedals and 2) to allow for room for the steering column.

Why are you trying to center it?

What's the plan on dealing with moving the lower control arms to one side?

Remember that the differential is also off center...

Why do you need to move the engine/trans over, is it an swap to a newer combo or something?

The car is a 70 Cuda 440.Complete restoration. When I first put the motor and trans in the shifter was centered in the hump.I removed the trans because  I had an issue with the clutch disc.I put the trans back in and the shifter is off centered a little so the boot does not fit right.I know I have a little movement with the trans mount that I will try.I was asking if I should loosen the k frame bolts to maybe give me a little extra room.I know the driveline is not centered in the hump but where it meets the trans it does not look straight.

Confused...

So you pulled the transmission, and only the transmission, when you put the transmission back, you feel like you need to shift the entire K-frame to move the entire drivetrain over a little bit?

As said, the K-frame is not to be moved.  If you off-center it, your lower control arms will shift with it.   One wheel could be sticking out of the fender, and the other one sitting way inside the fender...

Check your rear transmission mount.

(Unless I still don't understand what exactly is going on or what all was done to the car)

Hay man, not give you the gears, but that is not the question you asked in you original post.

SO what you are really asking is should the shifter be centered in the hump and if not how do I fix it?

have you checked the trans mount?  was the cross member removed?

I would guess that your transmission mount has failed as well, the rubber part can pull out of the metal frame.

There is some play in the engine mounts to k-frame - the k-frame is slotted so you can loosen the bolts and tilt the engine side to side a bit to get it level, maybe it moved when you pulled the transmission?

Yea, pulling and installing a trans usually involves a fair amount of heavy pushing and pulling. Could have tweaked the engine location ever so slightly and after running it all the way back to the shift location, is now off a bit.

I'd certainly try loosening engine mounts and lifting and pushing the engine/trans combo around to see if you can get it to reposition where you want.

Filthy Filbert

OOH, good points!

If the engine rotated in the mounts at all, that rotation or clocking could make the shifter look like it's moved laterally when really it's slightly rotated around centerline.   like "12:05 o'clock" instead of "12:00 o'clock"
