Hi guys need help again, I put a brand new AVS2 650 on our stock 383 4 speed and it runs and idles fine have 20" of vacuum etc. but when in gear and letting out the clutch the carb wants to stall and pops. it did the same thing with a Holley 750 mech carb which had a bad stumble already.

Can seem to figure it out check for vac leaks don't seem to have any of those just not sure what we are doing wrong?

anyone have insight? Much appreciated

Edelbrock has 3 holes on the accelerator pump are and per the instructuons we moved it to the tip hole this seemed to be better but I noticed how I rode the clutch and gave it gas mattered more it seems it doesnt need a lot of gas. Still tryi g to figure it out if we reved it to 15-1800 and let iut the clutch slowly it seemed to go on but if it started to sound lime it was going to die and I gave it gas it was like flooding and it woukd pop.

Yeah, back firing out the carb usually indicates a timing issue.  And as fyi...I don't know if you checked the idle mixture screw settings on your new AVS2 but I would.  I've bought several Edelbrock carbs over the last few years and none of them had the idle mixture screws set properly.  Start with 1 1/2 turns out then tune richer or leaner from there.  The float levels weren't always set correctly either.

Yes back fire

I'm thinking it may need more timing

I'd suspect timing out of the gate as well. What is your initial? Do you know what your all in mechanical advance is? Is the vacuum advance attached?

Check the amount of vacuum you have. Edelbrock's carb at idle runs on vacuum. You can get more vacuum by turning up your timing.

Wouldn't hurt to pull a couple of plugs to see if it's rich or lean?  I always go for the " low hanging fruit first"  :notsure:

You have plenty of vacuum. Did you check the float level?

Ok, so added a lot of timing and seems to be the fix, looks like I was at 10 initial and 26 total idling at 650 turned up the timing to 18 initial and 36 total and it likes it a lot, idle now set at 790-800. She runs a lot better letting the clutch out now and going no stalling or back fire. more power as well.

Now on to the noisy clutch that just happened  Every fix brings two more problems since I'm not a 3 speed guy I think I'm going to take it to a pro....now when we push in the clutch about half way its like some thing is hitting. in gear to the floor sounds bad, clutch out no issue.  :notsure:

Most likely a bad throw out bearing. Easy DIY fix...

Could be a number of things , clutch disc could be in backwards & hitting the crank bolts , could be over throwing the clutch & making noise if the clutch pressure plate is the wrong application . Could just be a bad release brg as stated above .

Ok, so adjusted the z bar nut to fork, put a little space between the TOB and the fingers of the clutch and no noise haven't backed out of the garage yet but nothing like it was. Still plan to take it to a shop to make sure its everything is right.
