I know someone can answer this. The dipstick tube on my 383 is pretty hammered with dents and dings from its 55 years of existence also at the end that inserts into the block is a bit sloppy but not horrible. Seems to me like cleaning the end that goes into the block and putting on a coat of RTV should keep it sealed so oil doesn't come out of the area where it goes into the block or am I missing something?

Sounds like you should replace it. The end that goes in the block needs to fit good & snug to prevent leakage, I wouldn't try to just goop it up and hope for the best. The repops aren't great either, I'd suggest finding a good used one.

The first repop I have tried doesn't work and the fill marks are off about 1/2 inch from the original so that's why I was hoping to use my old one. Thank you
