rear backing plates

what color are you guys restoring your backing plates? Paint or plated? :popcorn:

Depends on the rear end. 8 3/4 or Dana 60 ? :notsure:

They're usually a dull black Phosphate plating.....I try to duplicate it with various spray paints for longevity  :alan2cents:

That's what I was thinking of doing too for the same reason!
I tried the eastwood  zinc phosphate spray. Seams too dark to me. I know it should be a more dull look!

would the axles be installed at this time and painted as well?

Every original Dana 60 I have ever seen had natural steel backing plates.  No black paint.

I think it changed a bit from time to time.  I've seen them both ways and can not figure out a time frame / pattern.  I think judges will let either finish pass as original.  Or do what you like to make it last.
