Small block 340 factory inlet, what are these??

Hi Guys, just took my inlet manifold off to install a torker II manifold for the EFI and found these in each plane !!!! What are they please?

is that the top of the intake, a spread bore design??
what's on the other side?

I'm not sure what's on the other side as it's oil splash shield is riveted in place, it's a Dec 72 built 340
