Picked up a used A833 to swap out for the tired one in the cuda, forward gears seem fine but it`s pretty hard to get it into reverse. What causes that, something I might be able to easliy fix or just pull it and do a rebiuld?

Mine has always been significantly harder to put into reverse. I thought it was normal? :dunno:

Does it grind or is it just hard to get into reverse?

Scooter

Does it help to shift into 1st before trying reverse? Always worked on my older cars with manual tranny's.

No grinding just tough going in, putting it in first before doesn`t help.

Sounds like it could be a linkage issue, Does the shifter seem to enter the gate & just not shift the gear or is it tough getting the shifter into the gate?

torredcuda

same shifter as previuos transmission which worked fine and adjusted correctly, gate seems fine, just going up into gear is tough.

Try letting the clutch out just enough to get things moving then press the pedal down as you try yo shift into reverse.... If it slips into gear easier then the issue is likely because the reverse gear teeth have been flattened by being forced into reverse when the clutch was dragging....... (IE grinding) Reverse is the only non-synchro gear so the gear teeth need to actually line up, all the other gears are meshing full time...  Reverse gears typically have a chamfer to the teeth so they are self aligning, if that chamfer gets worn the teeth hit each other and stop rather then causing the gears to turn slightly & slide together...

My '70 Challenger 440 six-pack 833 Pistol Grip was always hard to get into reverse. Had to slap the shift lever hard towards my right knee then it would slide into reverse. I could NEVER seem to make it better.

That's a different deal, you are having trouble getting it into the gate... Which is exactly how it was designed, it should not just slide into reverse but actually require a solid slap to snap over the spring detent preventing you from accidentally shifting into reverse....

I assume it is not yet in the car so I believe it is normal sitting on the bench & dry  :alan2cents:

I don't think that's the case... He mentioned pulling it to do a rebuild...
