Getting ready to do the first oil change in my 73 and the former owner said he used 10w-40 conventional in it. It's a stock 440, so not really sure if the owner's manual direction still applies since it was a 318 originally. Are you guys using synthetic or conventional? Specific weight better than another or just dependent on climate? I have heard Wix filters are the best but seem pretty pricey. Thanks in advance

I use Redline 10w40 in my 70/440. It is full synthetic with ZDDP.
Don't recall the filter.

Flat tappet cams Must have extra Zinc
SO Brad Penn or Joe Gibbs oils designed for older flat tappet engines or virtually any oil with a good Zinc additive is a must .
Use a Wix filter .
20 - 50 racing oil is OK If the engine clearances are designed for that weight of oil , if not it is not a great choice as factory clearances require 10-30 or 10- 40

Hey CP are you stating that for a stock motor not pulled apart that its better to go with a 10W30 or 10W40 with a zinc additive?  I use VR1 on my motors but was always a little worried that it was a bit to heavy for them.  We're talking mostly stock 340 and 318.  When I added the cost up it was cheaper to go with the VR1 but I'm not opposed to going the other route.  The Lucas oil additive is bonkers expensive here and I would like to find a decent substitute.

For filters I use the Purolator Pure One's.
