Took my oldest son, 16, today to write his G1 or beginners driver's license....The kid is bright, so of course he scored 97%, 1 wrong out of 40 questions.....

But now the hard part....getting him to actually drive...he really could care less.....What kid wouldn't want to learn how to drive in his Mom's 2017 Challenger ? :crazytalk:

I would have been jumping up and down when I was a kid if I got to drive a cool car!   :veryexcited:

Must be something in the water down there? My 3 sons were all chomping at the bit to drive.

I was super excited to drive my dad's then-new 2001 Dakota. My parents were older so they were more than happy to let me chauffeur them around. Dropped them off at the door of restaurants, at church..navigated road trips. I loved driving and still do. I feel helpless without a vehicle.

Well my situation was similar....maybe...I guess.....My Dad  :andyangel:  had lost his license for his second DUI when I was 16 so I had to get my license to drive him back and fourth to work :drunk:  :haha:

I have a nephew that never cared to learn to drive either. In his 30's now. Living in Ottawa and Toronto I guess the transit system was always good enough.

It does seem the younger generations aren't as enthused about jumping behind the wheel to gain their freedom like we did...Maybe he's got it made and content at home Alan ???  ;)Through my teens and early 20s I was on a mission to drive as many different vehicles as I could just to say I drove that model...I thought it was a blast..Anything from VW beatles,mustangs,Javelins,chevelles,GTOs,corvettes,deloreans,MGs,etc...Then again the car culture was a much bigger way of life than it is today...

All 4 of my kids couldn't wait to drive. Started teaching them at 16. They all got there JR. license at 17.

My son is also 16, and he turns 17 just after Christmas.  Right now he could care less if he drives, because he has to drive with his parents.  As soon as he turns 17 and can drive by himself we may never see him again!  Well I guess maybe for some late night snacks and somewhere to sleep.  I know that's the way I was when I got my drivers license at 16.

For my kids, the oldest was in no hurry to get his license and the younger 2 couldn't wait to get theirs.   Fast forward a dozen years, the oldest drives about 3-4000 miles per year; the other 2 are driving the wheels off their cars.

I have painful memories of failing the written test for getting a permit in NY the morning I turned 16.   I didn't bother studying beforehand because I thought I knew everything (unfortunately, this thought process went well beyond driving).   I ended up spending most my birthday reading the driver manual and retaking the test the same day just before the state office closed.

My daughter had no interest at all in driving or getting her permit at 16.  Finally, 3 years later she started to drive and we bought her a car when she started college. Even then the car was used minimally over 4 years of college and sat on campus.
She now works full time and commutes for the job.  Driving is for a purpose and not a recreational thing like it was for us! We drove for fun and cruising. I think this is a lost art?

Allot of people today see cars as a necessary evil......  We saw cars as freedom... Manufacturers are working toward autonomous cars,  you'll never force me to own one but many are excited about the prospect.....  Whole different mindset...
