Hey guys,

Do you remove the antenna from the base for storage or poke a hole in the cover?

I remember my antenna not wanting to separate from the bade upon install. Does anyone have a way of getting them to separate? I'm guessing it's seized together and the threads go into the antenna so I can put penetrating oil in there. Would some light heat work?  It's on a 1971 Cuda so access to the antenna base is behind the splash shields and gills.

Any suggestions?

The base of the mast is designed to use a open end wrench on it just like theft proof vale stem caps.
May have to soak it in penetrating oil. Then use anti seize on the threads when you put it back on.

Yes. The threads go up into the antenna so I can't spray it without taking the whole thing out of the car.

Do people leave them on for storage and put a whole in the cover or remove them?

Assuming you get it off, only snug it down when you put it back on. Good luck getting yours off. The threads are on the antenna rod. I'd try some wd40 and let it soak.

I take it off and store it between the pass seat and the sill plate.

The father-in-law's mustang's cover has a hole and a grommet for the antenna. works out nicely.  Gives an "anchor point" to start putting the cover on, instead of tossing it onto the car and trying to figure out which way is what.

Maybe put a hole in your cover and try to put a grommet around the hole?

My covers have a hole and grommet setup for the radio antenna (california car cover).

Unscrew the antenna
Put cover on
Mark where the base is
Remove cover
Use a 5/8 punch to make the hole
Snap together the 2 pc grommet
Reinstall antenna (use a little dielectric grease on threads)
Put cover on

That's a great idea. I'll see if I can get it off. If not I'll get a grommet

I know it's not stock but on other cars that I had I installed a manual retractable antenna.

I tried again to get the antenna off and I didn't want to screw anything up. When I opened the car cover it had a patch for a antenna hole so I just used that. Thanks everyone

I always unscrewed mine when I parked it and put the cover on. Then put it back when I drove it. After doing this a few times, the threaded part of the antenna broke off. Luckily I was able it stick a small screwdriver down the hole and thread the piece on through. I then drilled/tapped and put a piece of 1/4" thread all into it with red lock tight. The piece sticking out is about 3/4" long. Now I just screw it in by hand and its tight enough. Get home, take it off and throw it into car and put cover on.

Btw, the antenna base and thread is brass.
