Read about it but didn't see it until now.

Damn shame.

Another B17 crashed a couple years back. One had a fire and emergency landed in a field in my area 10 years ago, then burned to the ground.  Pretty soon there won't be any flying ones left if they keep crashing them.

All due respect, but that wasn't a crash, that was manslaughter caused by a piss poor fighter pilot. Jesus, at least it would've been quick. Condolences to the B-17 crews families.  :bye:

I'm not sure I'd be so quick to judge. I'm thinking the KingCobra must have had some issue/breakdown/jammed controls. Probably have very experienced pilots driving those birds.

Tragic, those pilots are usually very experienced so something went wrong for that to happen.

You ever watch "MayDay"? They have some pretty clever people investigate crashes.

I saw the story on the news but they wouldn't show the actual crash. A very sad and horrible accident.

The bomber is from here in Houston, an air museum. They just had a big car and plane show benefitting Veterans.

Air show demonstrations are very thoroughly choreographed and it seems apparent one of the plane's crews was not where they were supposed to be.  Videos I've seen show a number of fighters making high speed passes down the flight line.  The air boss, who is the manager of the act, would have specified that the faster, smaller fighters to fly a path closer to the spectators.  The flight path of larger, slower planes in the act would have been further away from the spectators probably at least 1000' away.
Therefore, I believe when the results of the investigation are published, we will learn that either the B17 crew flew the wrong path lining up closer to the spectators than they were assigned, or the P63 overshot his assigned path and flew into the B17s assigned flight path.
I've seen similar demonstrations at Oshkosh dozens of times. The fighters make passes flying over the North South runway closest to the spectators who are west of the runway, the bombers and transport planes fly a higher altitude path along the east boundary of the airport.  And large formations of usually trainer aircraft fly a path down the runway but higher.
There are a lot of warbirds in these Oshkosh air shows every year but none ever get close to having an accident due to the planning and discipline.

Regardless of any choreography; in a situation where, as mentioned, there are theoretically highly experienced pilots in abundance, does one of those experts, in broad daylight, with no one shooting at them, in a prearranged scenario, still fly right smack dab into something as big as a B17??!! You can't say "oh, the B17 pilot was in the wrong place" The onus in any action is to perform it safely and you can't say that doesn't apply here. I'd suspect that something went on with the P63 guy because there's no apparent evasion that I saw in the video. Either way, 6 guys are dead and two increasingly scarce aircraft are too. Pity  :(

:iagree: my thoughts exactly, it looks like the small plane was headed straight for the ground ???, maybe a medical issue with the pilot or mechanical issue with the plane.....seems strange he didn't try to avoid hitting the larger, slower plane....at least in my opinion  :dunno:
