There seems to be a lot of "pro" gun people here in this conversation....

Car hobbyists tend to be a conservative group, not all of us but certainly the majority of us....  We tend to believe in The Constitution & The Bill of Rights...

And most of us are a little older & have found that if you trust your government to protect you then you should expect to be disappointed...

Do I plan the need to defend myself today? No... But I'd rather be prepared cause chances are if I do need to defend myself I won't have time to go get a tool in that moment...

In the OP's story, it took 45 minutes for the police to arrive. You need your own options.  :alan2cents:

I can only speak for myself but I don't live with fear.... I live with reality.... If your not prepared you've set yourself up to be a victim...

Not much different up here. Try walking around at Jane and Finch or Tuxedo Court around midnight and let us know how that works out. Shots fired almost daily. I have a good friend that works for Metro Toronto Police, that works the Jane/Finch corridor. He says the media doesn't report a 10th of what actually goes on every day.( Just like it does in Chicago or other big cities) Can't report facts you know ... might be labeled as "racist". He has his gun drawn every day.   Big cities everywhere are where the problems surface with human nature. Stuffing people in confined spaces is trouble. Then factor in certain "ethnicities and/or cultures"  that have different values. Pretty predictable results.  I went to high school in Scarborough in the 80's, you could buy a Mac 10 or a Beretta 9MM  out of a school locker for $400 ( Chinese mafia guns) I can only imagine what its like now. I got shot at and stabbed while living in Scarborough also in the 80's. I'm not a "tough guy" either I've been in like 5 fights since kindergarten.

Actually when I think about it, I feel safer when I'm visiting friends and family "down south" because I know they are carrying . At least there I'd have a fighting chance. Here I get thrown in jail for defending my family and property.

I've walked this earth for 53 years and never have I felt I needed to be "prepared" for the reality I might need to defend myself.
That feeling of protection or "being prepared" comes from a fear .

Thankfully I don't have that kind of fear in my life....
I don't get dressed in the morning and feel I need to bring a gun with me just in case I need to shoot someone today in self defence....
I'm taking my wife and kids to dinner and a movie tonight (finally seeing The Endgame) ..... I don't think I need to ask the wife "Honey...are you packing tonight or should I load up ? You never know we might have to kill someone tonight at the restaurant (to protect ourselves of course)...."

I just can't wrap my head around the idea of living in any area where you can not feel safe or comfortable unless you have a gun....to me that is so far from my reality it's absolutely crazy.... :looney:

You guys live in some of the nicest places in North America, but I would never want to live in an area with that kind of fear every day. :o

What's amazing to me is that people who do not carry think those that who do have fear, while in reality the ones that don't carry are subconsciously depressing their fear by denial thinking they are safe or somebody else will protect them, while those that carry have no fear as they have dealt with reality and can now be free from fear.

I carry all the time and it is as much a part of me as picking up my car keys to go for a drive - I don't think about carrying anymore, I just do so automatically.

I guess the closest place would be Toronto...(30 mins away) They have a population of 2.7 million and has a yearly average of 34 gun murders every year. :o

OK, I have a "hood" right out the front door of my shop. In my case it's a different perspective. Do you have business insurance? Car insurance? Home insurance??  If you do, you have the FEAR of something.  Now is a gun a 100% guarantee?  Hell no... But it's nice to have that "roll of the dice" tip the odds in your favor, even if it is only 51%.

On a personal note I'm 64 years old. There was a time when I could punch a punk in the face and kick him in the balls before he saw it coming. Those days are long gone for me. I've had the wacko at my sales counter threatening to kill my sales mgr over some bullshit argument. I like keeping the odds in my favor my friend.

Just for fun I just googled Georgetown Ontario Shooting... Considering you have no legal handgun ownership there sure are allot of shootings around there....

Here on the other hand we can own guns & getting a CCW permit varies from county to county... In my case there are more CCW permits in my county than anywhere else in California....

There was a time when Modesto had very little crime but various government programs to relocate former Oakland residents along with years of busing in low income folks from down south have drastically changed our crime statistics...

We have had to many home invasions, muggings, robberies, burglaries, vehicle break-ins & stolen vehicles..  According to our local PD we currently have 82 separate gangs in Modesto...
