Truly a sad day.  I saw Rush back in the days of the Moving Pictures tour. Best sounding concert I have ever attended. Three guys on stage made that sound.  No other backup or fill, just those three.

RIP

Neil Peart, the drummer of iconic Canadian band Rush, has died at age 67.
The influential musician and lyricist died Tuesday in Santa Monica, Calif., after having been diagnosed with brain cancer, according to a statement issued Friday by family spokesperson Elliot Mintz.

His death was confirmed by Meg Symsyk, a media spokesperson for the progressive rock trio comprising Peart, Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson.
Along with penning impressive lyrics, Peart was renowned for his proficiency on drums and expertly weaving together techniques from different musical genres, blending jazz and big band with hard rock.
After the Hamilton, Ont.-born, St. Catharines, Ont.-raised Peart joined bandmates Lee and Lifeson in 1974, his virtuoso drumming helped lift Rush to new musical heights. The band attracted a loyal, worldwide fanbase, sold millions of records and influenced a multitude of rock musicians with its complex, literary music.
The trio was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1994, joining the U.S. Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2013.
The band played its last tour in 2015, with Peart revealing the following year in the Rush documentary Time Stand Still that he had fought intense physical pain during that final run.
Peart's writing also extended beyond music: He penned a number of memoirs exploring his life and travels.
His survivors include his wife Carrie and daughter Olivia. Funeral plans are pending.

Without a doubt, THEE BEST rock drummer ... EVER!!

Neil's technical proficiency was simply off the charts!! His speed, fills and rolls with which he drummed were down right amazing. It was mesmerizing to watch the speed and technical precision that Neil employed in his craft. They didn't call him the "Professor" for nothing.

Funny but I remember reading some bad Rush reviews in the '80's where the reviewer said Neil's drumming was "hyper-kinetic" and distracting. They went on to say that they preferred Charlie Watts' simple back beat to Neil's hyper-kinetic style ... say "what?" That's like comparing a rare high performance Red Barchetta to an old reliable VW ... there really isn't any comparison between the two.

I was fortunate enough to have seen them six times over 35 years ... the first in 1980 on the Permanent Waves Tour and the last in 2015 on their final R40 Tour. Enjoyed them tremendously each and every time ... almost wish I would have seen them more.
Cheers!

Tis' better to have owned classic Mopars and lost than to have never owned at all (apologies to Alfred Lord Tennyson)

The first rock concert I ever saw was Rush.  Back in late '78 when I was 16 coincidentally around the same time I bought my T/A.  I saw them a couple more times afterwards but never again after maybe 1981.  They were my favorite band for a while when I was a teenager, and though as time went by I got more into other bands, I have always liked Rush and mourn Neil Pearls passing.
I think of this scene from the great but short lived TV series Freaks and Geeks whenever I hear Neil's name (no disrespect intended with the title of the video!)

I literally cried .  .  . I know he was very private and clearly not many knew of his condition.   Extremely sad . . .  :tired:
Drive it like you stole it . . . And they're CHASING you!

Been a Rush fan since 1974, Saddened  by the loss or their first drummer(John Rutsy) now Neil Peart.
Way cool suggestion on the back of their first album,( For best results Play at Maximum Volume)

I first heard them in 76 on a US station ,  liked the early music better when they were out to prove what they could do . I went to every tour , Farewell to Kings was the first , & caught every tour up to Signals , by far my Favorite band into the 80s but the music changed after signals , I still followed them but found a lot more hard rock I liked .
Peart was a whole percussion section on his own & incredibly inventive !
I Know Spikedog has seen them far more times than I have We both have a huge appreciation for Rush !

I saw Rush at least 4 times. All in the late 80's.

Moving Pictures was my first album I got when I was stationed in Germany.
Wore the hell outta of it.

yeah man.. in shock. one of the worlds best rock drummers, now we have to deal with Eddie VH, and his situation. This sucks  but we are at that age that this happens and we have to deal with it the best we can . God bless all who are dealing with this at a personal level also, I know your pain.
