Title: Colored wiring diagrams - 70 Cuda/Challenger
Post by: shawge on April 04, 2017, 08:02:35 PM
Did some wiring om my 70 Challenger over the winter holidays. I grabbed the scanned manuals from mymopar and added some color to the wiring diagrams using GiMP. Below are the results after a few hours.  Hope they are useful to others as they were to me.  Let me know if you see any errors.  Also let me know If other years are needed as it would be easy to add.

Cheers!

This is the coolest!!!!  MAN, nice work!   :clapping:

This is front light harness with relays is from
@chal340 (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/chal340_197)    :bravo:   Here's what he said about the diagram he made:

"I put one relay for low beam and one double relay for the high beam. (you can put 2, 1 for outside high beam and 1 for inside ) You can see schematic of the harness and of the relay."

Nicely done.

Looks like it was pain-staking work and should have been done originally this way by the factory.  :alan2cents:

thanks,  just finishing up the engine compartment, thought I took pictures of everything as I went through the tear down.  but  this blue wire (seen in photo) escapes me,  any thoughts?  please.    the plastic clip makes me think it goes along the fender well someplace.  not the oil pressure sensor, not the thermostat, not the windshield pump motor, not the horns,.... maybe for an option for something I never had.  70 aar cuda

AC low pressure switch? That seems like the only blue wire that would match. See if it the wire goes directly to a bulkhead connector.

@CamasCuda (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/camascuda_321)  It's the idle solenoid.

Thank you for this!

One comment I have... it looks like you did everything right by following the diagram color labels... but I think the actual diagram might be wrong...

On the sixth diagram titled " ralley_wiring_1_web.jpg ", it seems like they got the ammeter wires switched around. On mine (and every one I've seen), the red is on the left (and labeled as such on the actual cluster), and the black is on the right.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that's the case.

Just a word to the wise. Thanks again!

Also, one question... Why does the bulkhead in those pictures have an extra bank of connections? Mine only has 24 available spots, and two don't have any connectors in them. I'm a newbie here so sorry if that's a stupid question. Are the numbered the same way except for the 25-32?

Nice work.  Saved me quite a bit of work even though I'm color blind lol (still think it should be a recognized disability lol. Course what color to make the placard you hang from the mirror).

Can anybody tell me what this symbol is supposed to be?  I've got a pulsing test light on the wire going to the fuel sending unit.  In other drawings it shows a Low Fuel Relay but I think that may be an option.  Course also what are "Courtesy Lights"?  I found those on drawings to.

Thanks!  This group is the best.

Thought I saw a capacitor up there when looking from the floor up to the top of the back of the dash. Yeah, something else to check out lol.

Please note that the wiring schematic from the OP is NOT for every 1970 Challenger.

It is only for the 1970 Challenger with the Ralley Cluster.  There is a DIFFERENT wiring diagram for a Standard dash.
It is worth pointing out that the Osborne Book "1970 Dodge Challenger Wiring Diagram Manual" has only one "center section" diagram...and it is for the other (Standard) Dash.

This is obvious, and well known by e-body experts.  But if you are a newbie to e-bodies...you will drive yourself CRAZY trying to figure out why the diagrams don't match.

It gets harder when the alternator goes full field, and pushes 100 Amps thru the gage cluster before the bulkhead connector catches fire, and the ignition switch connector melts.  Then someone "fixes" it and tapes it all up.

Please don't ask why I know this...

LOVE the old school Simpson Analog meter. Used to just keep one around to visually see the needle when checking capacitors.

I had planned on using the original wiring harness.  I've had the car stored indoors.  I've had the complete wiring assembly apart.  It doesn't look back and the actual wiring seems to be in good shape.  I'm torn between using the original harness and possibly bypassing the amp meter gauge, possibly getting the headlight circuit off the original wiring, and doing the same with the alternator, making connections for it on the starter relay.  Course I don't want to see my car go up in flames either.

Colorized version of the Rallye Dash Wiring Diagram for the 1970 Barracuda adapted from the Challenger version with the correct 1970 Plymouth Service Manual page numbers and figure numbers.
I combined page 8-144 and 8-145 plus I inserted the 1970 logos to avoid confusion on what year the diagram covers.

I have a question for you all.  I am installing one of the replacement harnesses in my 1970 barracuda, but adding the A01 that came out of a 1974 cuda.  The map lamp switch return M2-20Y and the time delay return M6B-18Y* are wired to the same pin on the wires from the 1974.  From what I can tell it might not make a difference, but the question is am I missing something?   Should I separate these two wires on the A01 harness and pin them into the two separate yellow and yellow* connectors?  Or can I just leave them on one pin?  The M6B-18Y* om the 1974 A01 harness does not appear to be a Y* just Y so no black line.

Thanks!

Both of those are grounded so a common ground will work fine.
