Title: Of course a Cat 5 storm is heading my way.... just because I moved.
Post by: mopar thunder on September 06, 2017, 04:17:48 AM
All I can say is I hope my garage holds up. At least my Cuda isn't down here yet. I hate saying that but at least it won't get hit by the storm. My fingers are crossed that it turns away but chances are slim to none at this point. I found an issue with the lanai sliders too last night. Seems as the previous owner put down this nice paver patio around the pool but.... covered up the storm shutter attachment area so now I am in dire need to figure something out. I don't have much time.

Yuck, hope it all works out. I too have family that live in Ocala  and near Myrtle beach . Both of these locations are potentially in the path.

I'm with you 100%. certain States and areas I would never move to, not sure how/why people stay when they live in a disaster zone almost yearly. tornado alley? nope. hurricane zone? nope. flood zone? nope. why put yourself and your family through the yearly pain and stresses?

anyways, Good Luck to all our eastern seaboard members, looks like it might be a rough ride.

being an IT geek, this always come to mind when someone mentions a Cat5 storm ....

Hey guys,

I'm in Boca Raton.  It's headed straight for us.  I was able to get my wife and my daughter with Down Syndrome on a flight  to Baltimore on Friday to stay with Family.  My daughter wouldn't know what to do if she was here and just panic.  I've got plenty of gas, food and fuel for the generator.  It's not a matter of if we lose power if when.  Good luck all.

Good luck yall. I'm holding out hope that it doesn't hit Savannah head on, but it isn't looking too good. I'm just outside of a 500 year flood plain and hoping the winds won't be so bad that it blows the house down. Probably evacuating back to Athens on Sunday.

Best site I've seen so far for tracking the storm:

www.myfoxhurricane.com

I have been keeping an eye on the spaghetti models, and they haven't settled down yet.  I'll be putting up plywood tomorrow here in central Florida.

Yep, I'm here too.
Most hurricanes are nothing to worry about.  We've had 9 + named storms so far this year, and the first 7 of those didn't really do anything.  The 8th didn't come here, it went to Texas (which also doesn't usually get that bad of storms).
It's been years since we've had any really bad hurricanes.  This one is looking pretty serious though.  Anyone in the area needs to be evacuating or preparing for some time without power.
I've been in Florida for 20 years, and visited in the summers before that.  Back in 1993, I saw some of the damage from Hurricane Andrew.  Awe inspiring damage, and that was 9 months after it hit!  This one reminds me of Andrew, category 5, and making landfall near the same spot on the map.
The worst storms are almost always in August or September.  We always have at least a week of warnings before it hits though.  It's not sudden like an earthquake or tornado.
For the most part, the weather in Florida is great.  It's hot in July and August, just like everywhere else in the summer, but it's usually only cold (freezing) for a couple weeks in January.  No snow to mess with.  You can drive your car or work on it all year round.  Hail almost never happens here, and when it does, it's tiny tiny little ice bits, pea size or smaller, so no hail damage to cars either.  To have a hail damage sale here, they have to import the cars from Tennessee.

Wish you folks a lot of luck. Hope it decides to miss you, but hey we'll keep our fingers crossed for ya. I know what the hurricane heavy hitters are like. When I was stationed at NAS Pensacola in 1969 I was remanded to the base during hurricane Camille's visit, she was real nasty! Now of course I'm 30 miles from shakey town ( Los Angeles ) I wonder why they call it that?.........Hmmmmm
        Thanks,   Al

yes, you have warning but also have uncertainty and stress .
One brother still down there, moved our Mom out here to Texas earlier this year.

Certainly looks like Florida is in this monster hurricane's path . . . prayers for all involved!  Appears there are going to be plenty of flooded cars from both Florida and Texas . . .

The  track models shifted it west, bringing it right up the middle of the state. 650 thousand people in South Florida have been ordered to evacuate. All northbound roads out of the south are bumper to bumper, cars running out of gas , overheating etc. Very hard, if impossible to find bottled water, lines at all gas stations.  :rebelflag"

Sounds like the "Typhoon Parties" we use to have on Guam.... Drive out to the end of the Glass Breakwater during a Cat 4 & toast the biggest waves....  Did it for three storms,,, The third one was scary & figured it was probably best not to do it again.....

Cool! Although...looking at how exposed you would be, lucky you lived?
Why was it called the 'Glass Breakwater'?

QuoteWorst part is how long the power will be out.

I work for the county that surrounds Orlando, and have been assigned emergency duties.  I agree with Mark, no clue how bad, and how long it will take to get the power restored.  We were out several days for Jean in 2004, and that was a nothing burger compared to Irma.

Hopefully the tract will change, again, and move offshore.  At least if it does come up through the Everglades, that will knock it down some before it hits populated areas.

Named for Admiral Glass...

Henry Glass was a Rear Admiral in the United States Navy, best remembered for his role in the bloodless capture of Guam in the Spanish–American War.

Yeah, a little exposed.. Stupid, but you know the saying, Young, Dumb & full of ......    Luckily Apra Harbor where the breakwater is located is on the western side of Guam & does see much storm surge.. That tends to happen more on the eastern side of the island..

I'm all boarded up here in Ft Laud.  I came home from New England vacation Tuesday to find little left on store shelves, lines for gas, etc.  I've been living here 34 years, through Andrew and many more, this one has me scared.  I hope the garage door holds.  I'm putting the car up on jack stands to gain a little flood clearance, cooking everything in the freezer and watching the path.

Such uncertainty with the path led me to believe to stay. Ran into shutter problems and worked all day today putting them up and trying to fix a few issues. Roads clogged, little gas no supplies to get so I'm not feeling good. Plus the 6 pm forecast was NOW Irma is shifting west and rolling up the western coast...... right over me.  Too late to leave so will do what I can tomorrow and hope and pray things stay together. Houses seems well built but have no protection for the 4 sliders on the lanai in the back.

Hope your on somewhat high ground..... If not I've always felt the stairwell of a concrete parking structure would likely be a pretty safe spot to ride out the storm....  And I'd bring my Mopar along too...

The parking garage is actually my brother's plan who lives near Ft Lauderdale.
In an earthquake would not like being in a precast parking garage, too many construction joints , but should be ok in a hurricane, wind will travel thru it and water should not accumulate , park mid height.

Try to get up at least one level.  Sometimes the storm surge can flood areas.

I am still here. Up until yesterday we thought it was going up the east coast so we boarded up but then when I woke and saw it shifted and was coming here it was too late. Gas all gone, roads at stand still then so we have hunkered down and are just waiting. So far hasn't been so bad but I can hear the wind getting louder. The worst is yet to come..... and of course over night when it is dark.

:veryexcited: :cooldance:  Yeah, I got my power back.  Not too much damage here, lots of branches down and I have a fence to mend but overall thank God we dodged a big bullet here in Ft Lauderdale.

Made it thru ok.    Power was out for 24 hours, some trees down around the hood. Internet just now back up for good hopefully.  I hope @mopar thunder (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/mopar-thunder_60)  is OK, his area got hit hard.  And man, the Keys are devestated. 1 in 4 homes demolished,  no power, gas or food down there. And Jacksonville has unpresidented flooding.   :stop:

We made it through pretty darn good. Good test for this house, makes feel like money well spent. Minimal debris in the yard, no damage to the house. I put towels down along the garage doors since the face westerly. Good thing, they were soaked from the back winds of Irma.....  Cleaned the yard today and took the storm shutters down. It was a different feeling being in this house hearing those winds blowing though. We have power and internet so I feel lucky.

Well Murray, let me tell you. Sitting around with 88yo Mom, with no power, no A/C and no television was worse than the storm...    :haha:    But she's fine, thanks for asking.         :rebelflag"

Hurricane Irma decided to skip you in Bradenton and blast us in Orlando instead. I also had the tops of my large oak trees taken out by direct hit from tornado. No structural damage to house; yard, fence, and trees all torn up, but my 70 Challenger rode out the storm in perfect shape in the garage. God must be a Mopar man.

The Florida Mopar Association has been putting on the Garlits show for many years, and it's been a good show.
This year they've moved it away from Don Garlits museum to a larger spot about a mile up the road, and also scheduled the show a week later than usual.

Meanwhile, Don Garlits is starting his own Mopar show at his museum on the usual date.

Which show will you guys be attending?
I'm tempted to go to both.

That's odd...for two reasons....
Why wouldn't Don support the new location....
Why would the show need to move from such an iconic location....

I understand needing more room, and if that's truly unavoidable, then Don should just host a "kick-off" party at his place Thursday/Friday before the show to make it a larger long weekend event, attracting more long distance people. :alan2cents:

My power went out 1:15am Sunday morning, just before the eye came by.  Just got it on last night at 7:30pm.  no damage, just a few roof leaks, and limbs down everywhere.

I work for the local county public works department, and had sandbag duty Thursday & Friday. every resident got 10 filled bags. I loaded, i shoveled, i bagged, i tossed bags, I handed out forms, and collected forms and directed traffic.  Monday and Tuesday was damage and debris assessment, For as many trees down as i saw, there were remarkably few that hit homes.  i am sure it was no fun for them, but many were blessed by having the tree go another way.  One scene in particular was amusing tho.  I totally missed it on Monday when we drove by, as i was focused on how much sand had washed off of a new bridge embankment, and covered up all of the RCP pipe they had staged under the bridge. You can see the top of the barrel and bell end to the left of the picture. It wasn't until Tuesday when the dozer was moving the sand, that we spotted this:

I agree, it's pretty odd.
Don's house, garage, and two museums are right there on the property.  Don always participates a little in the event around the time that awards are handed out, and roams the grounds during the show, signs autographs in his garage, stuff like that.
Don's getting pretty old, and I've heard that his daughter is the person who's actually scheduling events and making arrangements.
The show has always been named Mopars with Big Daddy, though the regulars just call it the Garlits show.  At last years show, the Florida Mopar Association (who runs the event) announced that the show would be moving to a larger space, a horse ranch about a mile up the road, and that it would be held a week later than usual.
At some point (for unknown reasons), they decided to honor Herb McCandles at the show instead of Don, and the show is now named Mopars with Herb McCandles.
I haven't seen much advertising for the event, so I guess we'll see if anyone was paying attention and comes to the show.

Meanwhile, also with very little advertising, it seems like Don has thrown together a show at the last minute.  It's at the usual place at the usual time.  It's named Mopars and More.  Anyone's guess what "and More" means, but there always was a row of AMC vehicles at the event.  Could be anything though, Don holds a lot of different car events at his place.  I get the feeling that this show was created for the people who are bound to show up because they've been migrating to this same place at this same time for countless years.
Who knows, maybe Don will be at both shows.

The only dragster Don raced that he didn't build himself, was built by a guy named Boogie Scott.
I had the pleasure of visiting Boogie's shop in Louisiana a couple times.  He is a real pleasure to visit with, and an inspiring fabricator/racer.  He does restorations on pre-muscle car era vehicles, and like to race on the salt flats.
One of the main stories I remember from him was that he was having trouble getting his car to go over 200 MPH because at that point the wind resistance would cause him to lose traction.  He went around to all the local tire shops and bought all their wheel weights.  Then he melted them all together and put them in the nose of the car to keep the front tires planted against the wind.  After that, he could pass 200 MPH without difficulty.
