1971 Challenger Tried To Start When I Hooked Up the Battery

Hey guys,

I'm getting close to completing the Challenger.  I recently relocated the battery to the trunk with a battery cutoff switch and haven't connected it yet mainly because I keep going from one thing to another.  I just completed rebuilding the steering Column (thanks Cody).  I installed the column today but didn't connect any of the harnesses.  I had a buddy over to help and I decided just for the heck of it to connect the battery for the first time so he could be on the lookout in the engine area to listen or see anything unusual.

When I turned the battery disconnect switch to the on position the car leaped forward and tried to start.  Why did it do this?  What isn't connected properly?  Remember both steering column harnesses weren't connected so it bypassed that.   I was excited that it tried to start after all of these years and I'm sure I overlooked something but what was it?  What am I missing?

Where's your new battery cable going?

It sounds like the main B+ cable going to the starter is touching another lug on the starter or lugs are touching on the starter relay.

For it to just start on it's own without it being at one of those two areas, the clutch/NSS would have to be bypassed/shorted and power coming from the ign switch would have to be bypassed/shorted on to the starter relay.

Just looked down at the starter and they are touching.  Hopefully that will fix it.  Thanks Goodys
