My 71 Barracuda convertible is awaiting transport and I've been lining up a couple things in anticipation of getting it. One fix I hope to make right away is to replace some broken boot clips. I found the plastic ones online and I assume they work fine. Please advise if I need to hunt down the metal ones instead.

My upholstery guy said he can squeeze me in and take care of it for me but he was wondering if the boot is removable. I examined the car but I never really looked at that so I'm not sure If it comes out or is sewn to the rear seat cover somehow.

I think it works just like my 68 Dart.  There is an aluminum strip that screws to the back of the seat back.  The front edge of the boot slides into the aluminum strip.  The sides and back are held in place by snaps.  When the top is up, you unsnap the sides and back of the boot but keep the front attached to the aluminum strip.  The boot will just lay inside the well liner until you put the top down again.

Yup, the boot comes off real easy. Personally I would just buy a new one from Legendary  :alan2cents:

Thanks!

I may wind up buying a new one. The one that is there is the original and for some odd reason it still looks like new. The brown color matches the newer seat covers perfectly too. My only worry about a replacement would be that it doesn't fit as nicely or that the color is slightly different. Not sure how the clips are held to the cover though so if it becomes a big ordeal to sew in new clips, I can always get a new cover.

Oh yea I forgot it was brown, that will add more of a challenge matching the colour etc..., I was thinking it was white for some reason, my bad.

I would go ahead with the repairs but only with a very qualified seamstress   :alan2cents: :bigthumb:

You got me thinking now about the legendary one. The price seems pretty reasonable. I called them just now and asked for a sample of the boot and carpet material for color matching. If they are a good match, I might just go that route. I do have a super good upholstery guy that built me a soft top on the Vette so I'd use him if I decide to save the original. Probably be about the same cost either way in the end.

While I have your ear, do you know which color carpet that 71 should have with the h6t7 brown and tan interior? The carpet in it now is a medium brown but the restorer made a couple mistakes in other areas so he could have put the wrong shade in for all I know. There are a couple stains in the current carpet so I want to start off with a fresh one while I have the seats out.

No, sorry, I'm not sure the name of the colour nor have I had the privilege of restoring an interior that colour  :dunno:

Legendary claims there is only one shade for that interior and they are sending me a sample for comparison. I'm sure it will be fantastic. I like their products and I can see just ordering both and being done with it.

I'm also going to see if I can get some paint matched to repaint those black tail light bezels the right color. Every since you pointed it out, it's been bugging me. Should be an easy fix though. The guy is sending me the original paint codes so hopefully it matches just right.

Well that makes it seem easy. When I look at various suppliers online, they have lots of shade variations all with different names of course. I think Legendary is probably the best route for carpet no matter what. I trust that the color will be good. As long as the vinyl for the boot matches up to that on the seats, I will most likely go with a new one from them too.

Buy a new one... The old one probably won't stretch like it needs to..
