Bought an adaptor to run two 3.5" speakers for like 8 bucks on eBay..
I found some open box new 4" 2 way pioneer speakers on eBay for super cheap @ $15 and they were far cheaper than some no name low end 3.5"

Got the dremel out, made them fit.

Had to clearance some metal in the dash to clear the magnets.

I don't have much into this, so I just jb welded the speaker framers directly to the adapter and then used some silicon on the adapter to metal surface to make sure there is no vibration and secured it with 2 screws like stock.

Really happy with it.

I might add some inline bass blockers to it sometime.

Its nice having 4 channels of tunes vs just the rear 6x9's.

I had to clearance the underside of the grill to clear the tweeters.

Looks stock.

I did that in my '74 crew cab. Also had two 6" in front doors, two 6x9 in the rear doors, and a sub behind the back seat.

Nice work  :bradsthumb:

Certainly not as inexpensive, but I installed a similar setup that I purchased through Turnswitch.  The advantage for me was that I didn't have to trim any of the dash frame or grille to make it fit.  Just another option for those that are squeamish about modfications. :alan2cents:

This is very timely.  Any recommendation for decent speakers to pair with it?  I'm not much of an audio file so my system will not be very powerful or sophisticated, but I don't want crap sound either.  Looks like there is a version of that adapter on amazon for $10 that I'll pick up with my next order.  I have a new dash core to replace the bent original and it will be a good time to do the mods required while everything gets swapped over.

I used a pair of Rockford Fosgate P132 Punch 3-1/2 inch speakers mounted in a 1/4 inch plywood cut-out in the shape of the original speaker. I did have to trim the underlying sheet metal on the passenger side of the factory center speaker hole, just enough to clear the magnet. No grille mods were needed.

They have a really good range and power spec...

I have done similar mods in the past , looks like you did a nice job ! :bradsthumb:

I got my adapter and two speakers all from eBay, it wasn't something I needed right away, I then used some tin snips to cut the frame away and just rolled it under itself.

Speaker Choice depends on what stereo you have, depends on the stereo you have.

If the stereo is a stock a.m. unit, you might want to take the old speaker out and see if there's any ohm readings and wattage specs on the backside of the magnet.

Someone well versed on OEM equipment could probably answer your question better than I could if thats the case.

This isn't one of those day and night oh my God this is amazing mods, it just add the little more stage to the sound.

It would probably be a much better sounding set up with some 5 1/4's in the kick panels
