I finally got back to my fender tag project that I started last week. Thanks to Jaybee, jimynick, yellow thumper and HP2 for supplying tags that I could use for comparison. Also thanks to Bullitt and 318Stroker for their input.
I had 6 or 7 74 tags to work from. It was interesting to see what was included and what wasn't.
A04, basic group, I would think would have been a common option but it wasn't on any of the tags.
Driver side mirror, passenger side mirror and dual mirrors each have a code but even when dual mirrors were present both individual codes still appeared on the tag, always in the order of ds, ps, dual and always on the fourth line up from the bottom.
A57, rallye package, brakes and console were always on the third line up and in that order.
Simulated louvers, drip rail molding and wheel lip mouldings were always second line from the top and in that order.
A few other things were a bit more randomly placed. It was a fun little project and I think I've got it extremely close to what it would have actually been. I think I'll throw this card in the glove box until I get a tag made.

Look'n good Billy Ray. I bet one of the harder parts was trying to establish what your car was built as and what, if any, a previous owner altered. My car would be unrecognizable from the day I bought it.

Oh.... as is on my A57, N41 will be followed by N42

N41 is dual Exhaust and N42 is chrome exhaust tips. Neither of those showed up on the tags I saw with A57. Interesting.

Gotta love that AI

AI Overview

A "N41" code on a 1974 Challenger typically refers to a "transmission kickdown linkage malfunction" according to classic car repair manuals and forums; it indicates a problem with the mechanism that allows the transmission to downshift when the accelerator pedal is pressed quickly.

Painted exhaust tips?

AI Overview

In a 1974 Dodge Challenger, the "N42" code refers to chrome exhaust tips on the vehicle; essentially, the exhaust pipes at the back will have a chrome finish instead of a standard painted one.

There's another one with A57, N41 and N42! It makes you wonder why some got it and some didn't. Perhaps once the tag was full that was it, and yet we see two tag cars.  :dunno:

I know next to nothing about codes but I'm pretty sure 318-ebodies only came with single exhaust & no chrome tips..

Ya, I looked at Ian's tag again. It has N41 and N42. Both his and the one JayBee posted this morning are 360 cars. The others are 318 cars. So I think you're right Bullitt.

@blown motor  I found that text we talked we talked about. It was on this forum from member burdar  - Post#3.

While I'm sure there are exceptions, what it boils down to is that the fender tag was for the "body shop" while the bodies were being assembled.  Other areas of the factory had paper build sheets.  Generally, only the codes that required "body" modifications were put on the fender tags.  The radio code was on the fender tag because the body shop needed to know if the fender(or 1/4 panel) needed an antenna hole in it.  The "light package" was listed on the tag because the fenders needed holes for the turn signal lights exc...  :alan2cents:

I was wondering why a manual mirror would be on the tag then it dawned on me. The body shop would need to know if they have to drill a center hole for the remote cables or not.
