The dash pad has been out of my car for decades, sitting on a shelf in the garage.  I need to move it to storage but I'd rather not have the VIN tag out there; I have secure storage for small items at home.  I can see the rear end of the rivets on the underside.  I can see the anvil (the rod thats used to expand the rivet) still inside.

What is the safest, cleanest way to get the rivets to pull out with as little damage as possible so I can keep the tag in the safe with the fender tag and broadcast sheet, and hopefully reinstall it with the same rivets on a replacement dash pad someday.  The original is cracked to heck.  I think I can knock out the anvil rods from the top.  Drilling the bottom would eat up the metal needed to re-expand the rivet to hold it.

Or I could just give up and spend stupid money on a pair of reproduction rosette rivets...

I used a Dremel to cut it flush.
Bought the ECS kit with silk screen and rivets.
If you're spending $1k on a dash, what's another $50.

I have done my VIN the same with the transfer decal.I need to install it now will a standard rivet gun work on the rivets.?

Worked for me, a cheapo rivet gun I bought at K-Mart 40yrs ago.
Kinda miss that store, good memories as a kid.

dremel the back of the rivets flush.
Or use a correct size drill bit on the top of the rivets to remove.
Just be careful not to punch through with the bit so the drill rubs big round marks on the face of the tag.

Rivets are 40 bucks most places. NOS ones can be purchased from our site sponsor Roseville moparts.

avatar_Katfish @Katfish I miss them (and Woolco/Woolworths) too.  They were a great store.  Did you ever by Celebrity canned bacon?   MMMMMmmmmmm..

Still have this.

I have a decent rivet tool if it comes down to needing new rivets.  My VIN tag is actually in very nice shape.  And this is not a concourse restoration.  Its just making my car nice and newish again with some modest improvements like the 46RH, suspension upgrades, body stiffening, and someday an updated drivetrain.

Be careful of any drilling.
Even with a tiny bit you run the risk of the rivet itself spinning and the rivet head grinding into the VIN.
Happened to me, didn't know any better and whammo......
