I haven't had my convertible car insurance readjusted in many years. It's time to take a look at it again. What should my 71 Challenger Shaker 340 four speed convertible be insured for and what would it cost me if it were destroyed and I had to replace it? I have it insured through Hagerty for $60K. I'll attach a photo and a couple of documents. It's a driver, not a show car. I just got around to putting the Polyglas tires back on it. Thanks for any guesses. The inner fenders were replaced over 35 years ago with dealer (Mopar) parts as the fenders were hit in the early 70s and re-straightened to be only presentable at the time.

I have the original window sticker. Here's a b&w copy. I forgot to add it's the numbers matching engine and transmission. Thanks for any ideas of what to insure it for.

well documented
numbers matching
AWESOME list of OPTIONS
RARE!!

I don't think you could come close to replacing it OPTION for OPTION for $100K, even with more $$$$ you'd have to wait a long time or settle on a replacement  :alan2cents:

"ballpark" there may be SIX total built 1971 Challenger convertibles "JH27H1B" w/340 4-speed & SHAKER
& less than a DOZEN total built 1971 'cuda convertibles "BS27H1B" w/340 4-speed & SHAKER (& they'd be $150K+)

It's good to hear from you Dan. Sheryl and I enjoyed spending some time with you and Ed at MCACN a few weeks ago. Hopefully we can get together again sometime in the future. I'm trying to get a good idea about what I should do about the insurance on the car. I've got a lot of NOS parts stored with the car also and am trying to get a good idea of replacement value. Thanks for your input. I still think about all the nice cars at MCACN. I'm hoping to make Carlisle next summer. I should try to get to the show in Vegas in the spring. Again, thanks.

I use Grundy.  Prices seem real fair. Hagerty quoted me double what Grundy wanted.

Why not go as high as you can, yet are willing to pay per year?  It sounds like you have a rare car that will be VERY hard to replace, let alone at 60k.

I agree.
Go as high as you can afford.
Great cat, rare and desirable.

Hope you can make it to Carlisle this year.
Best of luck.

The purple one I restored a few years ago has traded hands several times well north of $100K....

With yours being a "driver" I would agree, get insurance as high as you can....six figures is not unreasonable.

Now if you were selling it and wanting to know an asking price, that's a different story. :crying:
I've taught you everything you know....but I haven't taught you everything I know....

Did Grundy provide an agreed value policy?
I bumped the policy on V Code Cuda with Haggerty to an agreed value.  (Just pay more for the premium)

Probably would be impossible to replace at any price.  I'd say $85k would be in the ballpark for an insured value.  Hagerty rates get pretty crazy as values go up, so for sure shop around with all the  classic car insurers to find a good rate.  Or contact Rally insurance, a broker who found me the best rate for my e bodies, which is around half of Hagerty's quote.

Beautiful challenger 100k is a reasonable insure value not sure it Will bring that kind of money on the market. I use American hobbyist insurance had god luck so far with them since 2002 had 2 claims no problem paid quick and no increase

Thank you for the input. It sounds like I need to shop around for insurance before I renew. I've had no claims other than the drivers window shattered on me several years ago while sitting in my shop. The insurance paid on that claim and I installed the window myself so they only had to pay for the glass. I realize the car would only sell for maybe (at most) $60K if I  were to list it. That's where I got the value for insurance purposes. I've turned down more than that because I thought it was being bought just to flip for a quick resale. At MCACN this year, I saw there were several insurance companies represented. I need to check it out.

I don't think you would be getting fair value if you sold it for $60k. I know a lot people feel that a car isn't worth a lot when they own it because they are used to having it around. Do a search for a shaker, 4 speed, factory 71 Challenger convt. that is matching #'s, rustfree and in very presentable shape. I don't think you will find one and certainly not in the $60k range, most likely not in the under $100k range if at all.
