The problem with a coupler like that is it doesn't provide for chassis flex like the factory plunge coupler does.  Over time your column bearing(s) will wear prematurely or you could have issues with the two piece factory steering shaft. Odds are, the play you are feeling is not attributed to the stock coupler.

:iagree: The play is likely in your steering box, not the coupler... :alan2cents:

No the play is in the coupler. I put a repair kit in it but that was 20+ years ago so I guess I`ll  just get a new kit but may also need a new coupler body, how common is it for the body itself to be worn on the inside walls?

The common reason for play in the coupler is someone reassembled it with the shoes 90 degrees out of correct orientation... You might want to check that..

That's exactly what I was thinking too...in 35+ years I've never come across a coupler that was "worn out" enough to notice any type of play...

It can happen but it's rare.  My old Challenger had been run for years with the cap loose.  The grease had cooked out from the heat off of the headers and grit got into the coupler body, causing wear.  You can get new coupler bodies for $60 if you shop around.

OK, I`ll just order a new repair kit, make sure it`s assembled correctly and see if it cures it.

Been there.  Did that.  The amount of play involved is significant if the coupler shoes are incorrectly installed... something like 10-15 degrees each way out of a full 360 degree rotation of the steering wheel.

There is a slop adjustment procedure for the box itself in the FSM.  You can also add a lower bearing, see: http://www.firmfeel.com/e_body_mopar_sector_support_kit.html

I was prepared to get a rebiult box thinking that was the issue but it`s fine, all the play is in the coupler.

I had an aftermarket coupler that fit loosely on the worm shaft resulting in slightly loose steering. The aftermarket coupler had no master spline and fit on the worm shaft like it was slightly oversized causing loose steering.  Put my OEM coupler back on with new shoes and now have solid steering. OEM parts are the best parts in my opinion.
