I finally pulled the trigger and purchased a new Steer and Gear power Steering box.

I went with the SPORT version based on my conversation with them.

They describe it as - Want that stiff feel and faster response for more controlled steering and heavy road feeling? This restored gear is great for highway driving and long road trips.

Looking forward to seeing how it feels!

I got the box bolted in yesterday, man that is a pain to install.  Working on getting column back in, but could not get the couplet to slide on.

Any tips on that?

Would you suggest putting the coupler on first then put the shat together or put it in once it's all assembled.

While I have everything almost apart, I thought it would make sense to change the coupler seal to the new style, but I cannot seem to find a link to one.  Any suggestions?

Oh and oddly enough I found a missing dust boot on one tie rod...so I have to fix that too!  More odd I found a brand new Moog pitman arm in my limited stash of parts...not sure where that came from!

Do you see a keyed spline on the coupler?

No not that I can see.

There is one..so that's probably what is holding you up. If you look at the steering shaft above the coupler, there is a little indent that lines up with the master spline.

You are correct sir.

But i think i found the real problem. There is no master spline in the steering box!!!!

Well now what!?!?!

I'd call S&G...ask for explanation/advice?
Carefully file away a spline and make your own master? Make sure it's in the right spot though.....

And here I thought this was going to be an easy no fuss swap for you......

Yeah, that is my plan.

Frustrating, I was really hoping this would be a quick install.

I spoke with Steer and Gear, and it looks like they made a mistake as there is no master spline on the box.

They are making it right, my choice of a new box or a coupler as theirs do not have the master splines.

I really do not want to take the box out again, so I opted for the coupler.  They are shipping it directly to me as opposed to my address in the US, saves me a 4 hour round trip.  So as long as that fits and the box work, I will be happy.

Yeah except it has now been over a week and I have not seen the part yet.  I was really hoping to get it back together this weekend.

Still waiting.  asked or a tracking number for the new coupler and nothing.  not very happy right now.

I think this weekend I am going to attempt to file the master spline in my original steering coupler and see if I can get it to fit the new box.

I would really like to get the car back on the road at this point.

Worth a try. Good luck.

Well...that worked like a charm!!! :D

Wish I thought of that a week ago.

Plan is to pit it all back together tomorrow abd fire it up. Fingers crossed that the box is as good as I hoped and they did not screw up anything else.

Confused, did you file the coupler or the box?
From what I read, you say the new box doesn't have a master spline?
