Re old tires, most manufacturers recommend replacing tires after 5 years, regardless of tread depth or how they look. I know it's sort of apples to oranges, but blew two tires on my fifth wheel trailer that were 7 years old that had good tread and no side wall dry cracking.  First blow out only took off the fender skirt.  The second one did $20K in damage to the side of the trailer and electrical that it ripped out that was in the top of the fender well.  Fortunately insurance covered everything except the deductible, but sure ruined out vacation.  You're playing with fire driving on old tires.

Re the BF Goodrich rwl tires, I had the same issues.  Tried SOS pads, etc.  Nothing worked.  Finally broke down and hand sanded them with 600 wet and dry sand paper with a flat sanding block and they came back 98%.
