Steel rim lip repair, Ok to spot weld and grind ?

All,

One of my 390 rims has some curb dents & gouges on outer lip.  Any reason why I should not spot weld and grind to get it to look better once I hammer back the dents ? ...even if trim ring covers it, I would rather get them looking as good as possible.

 :iagree: You will need to make sure that the wheel can be balanced after the repair. Also, make sure the wheel turns "truly" and isn't out of round.

thanks @Headejm    I didn't think the damage was extensive but I did notice the edge had a bow in it as well and wasn't sitting flush on table when placed face down.

I did my best to get it straight so it sits flat and runs true when I roll it across the floor.   I wonder if tire shop can spin rim only and determine anything.

They should be able to place a dial indicator on the edge of the rim, spin the wheel by hand and see how much run-out there is. A good tire person will know how to check the rims.  :cheers:
