72 Rallye Project

I'm getting rolling again here with my restoration project. Actually it is a slight resto-mod.  I'm not doing a completely faithful restoration.

I didn't want to post it all from the beginning again. As it stands now, I got the car back about 12 months ago from the second body shop. I lifted the car and dropped the entire suspension. The underside of the car had been sprayed with an epoxy primer. I made sure everything I could see was clean and solid and applied 2 coats of Eastwood's extreme chassis black.

I then had the rear axle, a 8 3/4 posi, completely rebuilt with almost all new parts and a 3.55 gear set. I've attached a picture of the axle with a new set of espo springs, with a 1" lift, going in.

I 've also installed new break lines, fuel line, fuel tank and other misc. bits and pieces.  The rear end is completed including the tail lights a new rear wiring harness and completely new drum brakes. The new rear bumper is from AMD. Roseville supplied the bumper (s). The first one had that crown problem which didn't work for me. Dave then sent me this one. It's for a '71 and doesn't have the jack slots. That's ok by me as I won't be using a bumper jack anyhow.

After pretty much completing the rear of the car I moved to the inside. I applied sound deaden-er over the interior and the roof. Next came the headliner. Talk about a fun job. Just need to be patient.
I also stripped down or thoroughly cleaned all the interior trim and then applied the requisite adhesion promoter followed by SEM Trim Black.

Next came a neat little bit of audio history. A while back when I first started this project I scored a still NEW Panasonic Cockpit overhead console.   :D  This unit, from the late 70's was still in the box, with every thing still in sealed bags. I bench tested the unit and installed it in the car. I had one of these back in the day in a Pontiac Trans I owned. I've temporarily installed the A pillar moldings so I can make sure the stereo cabling is routed correctly. I know these need to come back out to get the dash in.

Currently I'm working on the dash and I've just got back my Rallye gauge cluster from Performance Car Graphics. I'm also working on both sides of the fire wall to get the brake and
gas pedals installed. Will be getting a Vintage Air unit shortly also.

That overhead console is awsome!  You can tell people it's a rare option only available in 72.

Great idea.  I would believe it.  Car is looking great.  I can tell you're putting a ton of time and love into it.  Keep chugging along.

I'm actually moving towards treating the car as if it was a '72 SE.  Around 76 or 77or so I came across a Lime Green SE with a six pack engine and a white vinyl roof. Don't remember exactly the specifics, I really wanted the car. Couldn't swing having 2 cars then and I decided that I couldn't use something that nice for a daily driver. :crying:

I've got the console in the car and and I've added the SE medallion behind the rear side glass.  I'm putting the 72 strobe stripes on the side. Not doing anything to the rear window though. I plan on putting the blackout hood decal on. I'm trying to see if I can incorporate the numbers letters  '72 SE as a cutout in the hood decal in some fashion, haven't figured that out for sure.

This was U-code, 4 speed, R/T SE car. Almost like the one you remembered.
