But when you take these cars apart often there is areas that haven't been exposed to sunlight where the paint is in excellent condition... On my Coronet that spot was hidden by the windshield gasket... The paint there was pristine... The rest of the paint was toast but that area hadn't seen the sun or anything else since September of 1967....   I've done allot of cars through the years & practically every one has had a bit of good paint...

...and that's exactly what the paint rep came in and did....matched the new colour to the rear parcel shelf

Every time the manufacture gets a new batch of paint from their suppliers there is always a slight variance in the paint colour. Case in point, when I decided to get a Shaker hood for my 2009 Challenger I found out their was 4 different formulas on file for the 2009 "Stone White" SW1 paint code. To get the correct colour my body shop had to spray out 4 paint cards to see which one matched.  At the time my car only had 1000 miles and none of the 4 matched perfectly.  :looney:

Exact thing happened to me when my 2017 Ram was damaged last Winter.... :slapme5:

I would love to see the package tray your rep matched the color to.  That's probably not going to happen, factory paint was never that far off coming from the supplier, ever, especially during the same model year.

I love the fact that you take such an interest in my work.  :worship:

Here are before pictures from a year ago of the package tray still wearing original paint. At the time I was using the rear package tray to match FF4 Green for a 1970 Challenger I was restoring at the time. Hence the pictures of the Challenger hood scoop inserts. The same mix was used on the AAR....As you can see it's not a perfect match against the 50 year old paint. The new two stage base/clear paints have much more depth to them and look way better in my opinion.

As long as the customers happy.  I was wrong, it's only 5 shades off.  One thing about brand new paint, it always looks good even when it's way off.  Looks to me the hood insert is still original paint, I'm sure it's the lighting that makes the body look so far off in color from the package tray that never seen the light of day.  Thx for posting, I must be pickier then you, that wouldn't be close enough of a match for me no matter what the customer said.

I guess I am, when customers are spending 10's of thousands to restore their pride and joy, I make an asserted effort to get it right and that's not even remotely close in the "restoration" world.

The Challenger hood insert is actually an AMD reproduction piece, note the lack of the tray on the back...but hey, you can think whatever you want... :)

It's not what I think, it's all about you. And no, the color isn't remotely close.

Day #378

Well this is going off track pretty good.... :looney:

I'm still waiting on two items to finish the assembly. First off, I gave up looking for a 171 master, so I just used an aftermarket master and agreed with the owner to swap it out one day if we ever find a nice reasonably priced 171.

Next, I sent the dual point distributor to Brian at Crossram Connection which should be back any day.... :fingerscrossed:

....and like the rest of the world, I would like to find a Group 24 battery, but for now we're going with a plain battery and maybe one of those "topper" kits.

I'll get some current pictures up tomorrow. :takepicture:

Back in the late 80's I towed in a blue Dodge Daytona. Du-Pont  paint mix did not match, not even blend-able.     With some research, it depended on what plant built the car. this car was a week old. once we deter-mend ware it was built we were able to get the formula. back when there were chip books they had alternate cards to better match certain colors. Now Exalta (formerly Du-pont) has a thing called the vindicater. I give them the paint code and the VIN off of the vehicle when i order base coat. It uses the formula that was used on the vehicle. I know it was suggested I am NOT a professional painter, but don't tell me that colors don't very that much in the same model year.  :alan2cents:

I'm sure it is pretty close, but age, even without sun will change how something looks. But you don't really know how close you are without a standard to compare to. And people mention how a certain paint formula done the same by different manufacturers can look decidedly different. I'm willing to believe that a 1967 Coronet built in February could be a different shade from one built in August.   :pullinghair:   I guess I'm just wondering how judges who are judging top notch 'gold' restorations determine what is correct. Mike's pickiness is infecting me...lol
Anyway, I'm thinking there is no way to really 100% define the correct shade. But I do know (IMO) that the paint on your Coronet looks very nice. As does sydwaz's 'cuda. And from the looks of it, Orangewagon's 'cuda going to look pretty nice too.

I am amazed that someone can make a judgement on a paint color based on a digital picture on a website viewed through a monitor... I'd think the person commissioning the work is the only person to correctly judge if they like the final product or not... And the have done just that.
Others should go back to their own work instead constantly picking on the same people. I think the word some would use to describe this kind of behaviour would be ''trolling''?
I'd guess 99% of the cars belonging to the members of this forum are not 100% accurate! When someone takes the time and effort to show the others what is involved in a real-world restoration for real-world customers, even if it's not meant to go for all of the concourse honours, that only a fraction of us have the means or desire to attain, I appreciate that, and I am sure most forum members also do.
Thanks Alan.
