I sprayed this in Centari, twice. I still have bad memories from that experience. It's really a sensitive colour.

I love Centari, but if your spraying a metallic I'd go base-clear....  Plus Ditzler's color matches on FC7 & EB5 are definitely better than Dupont's....

Yes: I sure wish I had Base/cleared that one. I wanted it original though. I would never try that again with FC7 even if the paint was available. I'll have to look for a piece of original trunk rail I used to match the paint, it was a nice unfaded, fairly large piece.

You can cheat. I sprayed my buddy's Civic that swine silver blue in Centari and after 2 short whiskies, we shot it with clear! I thought the metallic would sag but it didn't move at all and that car shone even when the fenders were falling off on the ground from rot.

When you convert some of the older Lacquer and Enamel formulas to modern urethanes some of them change tints.  We've had those problems.  We've shot some acrylic lacquer to get the right color, we've bought a pint of original lacquer to spray a test panel and then had our paint supplier custom mix the color.  We did a couple Corvettes for a NCRS judge and he actually found some model car paint in a hobby store that he believed was the right tint. We sprayed a test panel and did a profit on it and came up with the right formulas.  I hope Cody, that you had your instructor spray a panel for you to take home and that will be a start to get the right formula and/or custom mix.

Just made it home after a fun trip to Carlisle and then down to the PPG training center.  Learn about a few new products that I will be testing out and was able to confirm the techniques that I'm using are right in line with the high end processes and best practices.  I'll try to post of some of my notes once I get some sleep.  One of the products I'm excited about most is a sandable epoxy they have now.

Unlike products like Polyester, the Epoxy provides a vapor barrier so wet sanding would be fine.

The instructor had a spray out of the original FC7 Plum Crazy FACTORY color.... We are talking the same as the factory used.  This stuff has been gone for a long time.  We lined it up with the newer product lines (FC7) and neither of the newer PPG colors were very close to the original.  I hope to have more time to post some of my notes once I get home later in the week.

@Cuda Cody I'm really surprised that PPG can't match their own original color. Did they recommend any changes to the new FC7 mix to get it to the original? My car will be painted in the next 30 days and I'd like to get close to the original color. My car has had one repaint and I'm not quite sure where the original color is (trunk, under trim pieces, etc.). Thanks for your comments!

Different paint lines spray out completely different.  The Waterbased FC7 was WAY off and just gross.  But the Waterbased has some benefits that solvent base can not do.  Bottom line is you will need to tweak the formula and do a lot of test spray outs.  If I had more time I would dial in all the PPG High Impact colors and share the codes with everyone.
