I've removed the complete trunk pan except where it goes under the tail piece. I don't want to remove the tail piece.  It is good. I bought a two piece replacement pan. I am planning on doing a butt joint along the back.  My thought is to cut the old pan off of the Z Brace member 3/8" so the new pan sits on the brace member for the butt weld. Looking for thoughts and advice on this method. Thanks

My thoughts go like this. As described, you're into too much butt welding and unless you're a professional welder, you likely won't be satisfied with the way that'll turn out. I'd sell the two piece floor, buy a one piece, remove the trunk lock bracket, skin off the flange remnant of the old floor and slide the new floor in. There are threads about this type of thing here should you desire to look. Just my  :alan2cents:

Thanks for the reply. I took your advice and found an AMD one Piece trunk pan.  Being the car is on a rotisserie, can the pan's trailing edge flange be slid under from the inside and then laid down? I've looked for other threads and have seen pans installed by sliding in from outside.  Other methods I've seen are cutting the back off of the new pan and doing a lap joint along the rear or a butt joint. I really don't want to mess with the rear panels. If I have to I will.  If anyone knows of a thread that can provide some insight, please post a link.

I removed the tail panel on my 70. Nothing to it and was glad I did because i found a dime sized problem spot that would have came back to haunt me. It also gave me a chance to strip both sides of the tail panel and do a super clean paint removal on both sides. I then shot it with epoxy after metal prep and am really glad I went this way. I did this because someone had put a two piece pan in mine years prior and I hate them for the reasons listed above. My build thread should show the process.
