340 Torsion Bar #'s

Does anyone know the correct 3 digit number for 340 torsion bars. The number thats located on the bar. Thanks Ken

unless it is a '70 model year 340 4bbl car with 3.55 (A36) or 3.91 (A31) axle package

now it would get 781/780 (1857781/1857780) 0.92" dia. bars

Thanks. I wonder why they used a different number in 70 than in 71?

My orange A66 came with the "Hemi" suspension, big bars and springs.

So just to be clear on this

The HD suspension for a 70 A66 Challenger would have normally received the 778-779  T- bars; the same as a TA Challenger.

If you ordered the A36 (3:55 ratio) or A31 (3:91 ratio) you would receive the big block 440-426 T bars 780-781 as part of these axle packages?

In looking at the original 1970's salesman's options codes; the A36 was only available with the 383-4,  and the 440 and 426 (automatic only)
The A31 package was available with the 383-4.  Did the availability of these options change and were made available for the 1970 340 Challenger late in the season?

Just curious. The Data does not support that. This is new to me!
Would love to see a build sheet showing these codes concurrently.

the STANDARD 'cuda (BS) suspension is S13 "RALLYE SUSPENSION" & includes the 779/778 torsion bars
ordering the OPTIONAL E55 "340" or A53 "340+6 TRANS AM" package does not change this

ordering any ONE of the following OPTIONS: A31 "3.91s", A36 "3.55s" E74 "HEMI" E86 "440HP" E87 "440+6" included the S15 "EXTRA HEAVY DUTY SUSPENSION" & included the 781/780 torsion bars

* things changed or were clarified shortly after the ordering guide was printed and the 3.55 & 3.91 axle packages were available with the 340 & 383

* the A53 package included 3.55 gear and had the 3.91 gear OPTIONAL at no-cost (this was not the A36 or A31 axle package)

* the S15  "EXTRA HEAVY DUTY SUSPENSION" including the 781/780 torsion bars was a stand alone OPTION on E55 "340" (BS) & E63 "383 4bbl" (BH, BP, BS) cars

1971
the S15 "EXTRA HEAVY DUTY SUSPENSION" was included on E-body with E74 & E87 ONLY

1972
the S15 "EXTRA HEAVY DUTY SUSPENSION" was eliminated from the E & B-body availability list

the 779/778 torsion bars were on all 340 E-bodies 1970-'73 (& '74 360s) except as mentioned above (1970: A31, A36, S15)

you have to remember the '70 340 Challenger was also late to the game & the printed "official" material had a hard time keeping up with changes

the actual dates may have varied but Challenger closely mimicked Barracuda, but was not "identical"

If I read that correctly, the 340 shares the same torsion bars as the 383, but the 440 had stronger/beefier ones.

Here's my 71' 340 broadcast sheet numbers. I just sent my stock bars to firm feel to be re-clocked at 30 degrees, heat treated and powder coated.
