70 challenger dash pad question

Good afternoon fellas,

My original single speaker A/C dash pad core for a 70 challenger came out to be rusted for restoration. So now I am on the look out for another core. I found one for a 72 challenger 3 speaker dash pad NON AC. I was always interested in upgrading to a 3 speaker dashpad with AC. So my question is, is it safe to send out the 72 challenger 3 speaker non AC dashpad for restoration and have them modify/cut out the AC vent holes from the metal? I just do not know if the corner speaker grills are the same for all year(s) challengers? And if it is possible to use a 72 dashpad core for a 70 challenger?

I believe the steel cores are all the same

I wouldn't mind a 3 speaker dash myself the outside speaker grills are kind of tough to find so far for me anyway

Thanks for the responses fellas. Yes I hear those speakers and speaker grilles are tough to find, and when found are really expensive. Lucky for me, I found a decent condition one with speakers and grills. just wanted to make sure the dash and speaker grills are compatible for a 1970 Challenger. I'm going to send off the dash to get restored as a 70.

& 1970 Challenger speaker grills are 1970 Challenger specific (due to the fit/shape of the dash pad) there is a "J" (VS. a "B") cast by the part number on the bottom side

That would make the 70 grills even more difficult to find

If you're planning on putting in speakers that are something other than stock, there will be some surgery needed on the metal frame to created clearance for the larger magnets that come with modern speakers.   This is true for the center speaker as well.   Between a jig saw and sawsall, it's very doable - just didn't want you surprised.

Oh okay. Yes that would be fine to do some surgery to the metal. I am going to be installing aftermarket speakers. My car is going to be somewhat a restomod, but would like to keep the interior appearance to a 70 challenger. I just read somewhere that the outside speaker boss are shorter on a 70 challenger. I don't mind shaving off some plastic off the boss to make it fit correctly. I just wanted to make sure the outside speaker grill appearance look like the 70 challenger. AND if the dash core off of a 72 would fit correctly on a 70 challenger.

I'm not an expert but there are some here.... I thought a 1970 challenger dash pad was 1970 challenger specific. The light bar is specific. I'm trying to learn here to. Can someone that knows for sure weigh in on this?

Yes, you're correct on all accounts...but when it comes to reproduction pads, all bets are off.

There's a "B" pair w/speakers for $370.00 and a "J" pair for $385.00 w/speakers & backing plates currently on eBay.

You're welcome but IMHO I think those prices are high. Just thought I'd post what they're "asking" on eBay. I know I wouldn't pay that, maybe $200.00 max.

I've been watching a thumbwheel AM/FM at $1,100.00 for a long time and it still hasn't sold with over 20 watchers.

@Jaramillo1993 before you sent that dash core out to be recovered make sure you remove no only the speakers but also the mounting brackets screwed to the back side of the dash pad....
