Who here has a black engine bay and their exterior is not black? Let's see some pictures. I know it's not for the purist and may not look as good but my engine bay is currently black and I'm debating a color change. My time is limited and not sure if I'll go down the road of pulling the engine and all. If it looks awful, I won't do it but debating going hemi orange.

I'm not certainly not a purist but that's something I'd never consider on a Mopar.

Ok I'll admit . . I have a black engine compartment . . .  :dunno:

Layout of our bays warrant color

Here is a before and after..........I did the black in my garage while attempting to restore as best I could.  The after ....a local Mopar guy did the bay and did not pull the engine to paint it all..............I think he did a great job.   Hope this helps you go to body color..........

Big difference! It really brightens things up in there. Nice job if he didn't pull the engine. When you think about it, it's really not that bad to pull the engine and then can paint that too. Not a fan of black engine compartment on non black Mopars but I think a beautiful paint job and nothing done under the hood is even worse.

Wow that's impressive how well he painted the engine bay without pulling the motor. Any details on how he did it? I'm guessing remove as much as possible? Was it sprayed or brushed, I'd assume sprayed but would think at times the angle of the gun would be challenging?

YellowThumper

The pro I have discussed this stated he uses a small detail gun.

I've painted more than one engine bay with the engine in there just as I've painted more than one engine while in the engine bay (spray can overhaul).. Its not near as difficult as it seems, yes you have to remove as much stuff as you can but the way the inner fender wells (aprons) tend to angle away from the engine helps a lot. It also helps to remove the hood although you can do it with the hood in place (just more difficult). Once you have everything disconnected or removed, cover up anything you don't want painted, then spray it. A detail gun works very well but you can use a standard HVLP gun, just have to narrow up the spray pattern.

The quality of the job depends on how much you remove, things like the brake line that runs across the firewall are very hard to mask and removing it means having to bleed the brakes. It just takes time, but do not forget to degrease everything!! Also, mask off everything to include the space between the radiator support and grille.
Mopar or no car!!!

Mine is black previous owner painted it. Someday I'll get around to painting it body colour. To busy driving it now....  :)

Tin foil has comes in handy when spraying paint in tight areas. It will scrunch up and crush easily around engine bay parts protecting them from over spray. May want to use some masking tape to secure the crumpled tin foil.
