I have been looking for the right e body now for 60 days and have run across a nice candidate. The car is stock, automatic with 3.91 gears. Since I have only driven one E body about 1 mile and the car had 3.55 gears really have no idea how these cars drive. This car has PS, all stock and all though have not seen it supposed to be a very nice example. I do have a 69 Z28 with 4;10 gears. That car is great around town but no fun on the road. Can someone give me an opinion of the drivability of the car regarding low end torque, does the torque curve come in late like the Z or with the 3.91 it will come in earlier? More balanced? Thanks I know this is a random question. Plan to go see the car and drive it soon.

My T/A has 3.91 gears and although it's been a while since my crazy days of youth when I ran it hard, I recall it running like a scalded cat from off the line without having to get into high rpms to get into the power band.
Highway driving was no pleasure with rpms over 3000 at 60 mph.
I also have a 71 V code 4 speed Challenger 4.10 rear that I was trying to sell without success.  Since I'm "stuck" with it, I've envisioned either getting one of the 833 transes with OD or an overdrive unit to improve the drivability.  It's a blast no pun intended for local driving, but highway driving is a burden, so I'd like to rectify that situation.  If my T/A wasn't a trailer queen show car now, I'd think about the same for it as 3.91 gears are not often fun for a "driver".

You can always change the gears. I have 355 and they are a good compromise. The size of the gearing would not stop me from buying the car.

You know the saying, you can't have your cake and eat it too. You want a super fast car off the line get 3.91 gears,  you want a nice highway cruiser 3.23s . Can't have both unless you're willing to sneak an overdrive in it. Or just cruise at 55 and enjoy the sights!

The 3.91's will give you great response and it will haul the mail up to about 100MPH. The 340 has a bit more lowend grunt than your 302 and it will like to be shifted at a lower RPM. 3.55 to me are just a compromise. If you go on long trips once in awhile I would get another complete 3.23 unit and swap it in before the trip. If you don't tear it up around town then just leave the 3.23 in there.

That is one thing I was wondering...the low end torque as compared to my DZ 302. That little engine loves to wind and with the 4.10 it surely helps it, but prefer to have a torque curve that starts before 3500 RPM. I am guessing that the 340 with the 3.91's will ring in the outer carbs pretty quickly and have a nice pull.
I have a 69 Charger RT with a 440 and that is so MUCH fun to drive with all that low end torque even with 3.23's.

I have a 505 stroker in my '68 Charger with 3.23's and it pulls hard for a long time!

The 340 will be a lot nicer to drive than the 302 as long as the six pack is dialed in correctly.
