The wood grain door inserts aren't found on early build Challengers, the first couple months production didn't have them.
After that they were standard, except I think the Deputy Challengers never had them.

Wouldn't it have been just a parts availability thing? Like the door was obviously made for something to go there.

Likely the idea was that the higher level cars only would get woodgrain, then they discovered the fact of having two different door panels was too much of a hassle.  Like the new Metro panels only come with holes, so you have to install the woodgrain. I restored a early build convertible with blue interior where I had no choice but to install the woodgrain.
