With the tools and skills he has, avatar_Cuda Cody @Cuda Cody could fix that ...
Cheers!

Tis' better to have owned classic Mopars and lost than to have never owned at all (apologies to Alfred Lord Tennyson)

If you could go back and get 1 free part off the car before insurance picked it up, what would it be?

You think they would notice the rallye gauge cluster if it was missing?   :D

Wow tough to look at!  Damn.. I was thinking maybe the shaker bubble but apparently not.  Also the seat belts would interest me.  I have none in the convertible at this time . .   That is worse than I imagined.
Drive it like you stole it . . . And they're CHASING you!

6-pak might be easier to remove than the gauges

Damn, that car don't have one straight panel, but very fixable. At 10k on the auction now, wonder when it ends. If I only had the space and the time.... but I have 4 projects already that I need to get done before I'm too old.

I'm not sure why people are bidding on it before the sale date is posted?  :dunno:

Just curious, what is the best way to insure to avoid issues like this?

I've been using Hagerty. I wouldn't use your regular car insurance. That's not their specialty. Hagerty has a stated value of cars & then you send them pictures. They want to know what they are insuring. My cuda, I insured for 75k. I thought that was realistic for a non-numbers car but if you have a numbers cars, you might want to go with their value guide. We see what hemi cudas sell for. I don't know if you remember the story of the hemi cuda that had a under hood fire. It was an auction car. The guy who owned it had cheap insurances on it & after the fire, the insurance company totaled the car. The company that repaired it after the fire said it was wrong to total it but the policy was too little. BTW, there are other companies that do specialty car insurance. i chose Hagerty because of what my body guy said about dealing with them......Joe

I think you need to insure the car for the value you'd be happy selling it.
Unfortunately, repair costs have gone so high, you'd need to insure it for almost 2x the value, if you know you'd like to keep it no matter what.
In the case of the car in this thread, it would definitely cost 2x in repairs compared to the final value.
Now, if you do the work yourself, that's another story.

I don't think insurers will let you overinsure a car?
Some like Hagerty offer an option to give the insured the right to buy the car back if it's totaled.
They can be strange on values.  When I was still with Hagerty a few years ago, I had my NOM V code 71 Challenger insured for around $80 or maybe it was $85K. I'd been trying to sell it off and on for years for around that value with no takers.  Then they sent me a letter that they'd reviewed my coverage and a few of my cars were underinsured.  They said the '71 was worth $105K.  I wanted to respond great!  At that value send me a buyer!
I called my agent and said maybe it's undervalued but not by that much, let's see about raising it to $95K, which Hagerty agreed to do.
There's a lot of questions on this cuda.  Is the missing fender tag around, or a broadcast sheet?  If not there's no proof it is an original shaker car or triple black.  Is it #s or NOM?
No tag and NOM it was likely an $80K car at best.  With documentation and #s it would likely could have been worth $125K.  So a lot of info needed to determine if worth repairing.

When I insured my convertible,  they required an appraisal.  Unfortunately for this guy, he had it under insured.

I haven't heard much about it from insurance in a while so I don't know if it's still available but they use to offer a salvage insurance to be able to buy it back at a reasonable price if they consider the vehicle totaled.

After seeing post like make me re think it

I now have American Collectors insurance and like Hagerty they have an option to keep your car if totaled. Sometimes you can negotiate with your regular insurance company to buy it back but it usually not worth it as they get decent money for salvage cars.

How does that work? You pay an extra premium, or it's standard on policy?

I paid a little extra, not sure exactly how much but it wasn`t a lot.
