Yup: I do that all the time. Politely tell them that we can't make a deal and it's best for them to move on. It's not that hard. As for you should buy that car for $47k because they aren't making anymore Cudas I say take that $47k and buy a decent Viper, newer Challenger etc. and have a ball. There is not $47k value in that mess.

You know, I think I'm gonna side with the OP. That car is NOT worth that crazy amount no matter how much time, energy, or money you put into it. Period. @dhh made an offer based on the cash he had and what he thought the car was worth. Many people throw a crazy number out and haggle. It isn't uncommon. People sell stuff for WAY more than it is worth knowing people with ask for a lower price. This may not happen as much for a collector type car, but not everyone has that experience.

But that isn't the point. The point was the dude's reaction if that is what actually happened. So what if you spent your time with someone and it turned out to be a waste. If you're selling a car on a website you have to factor in the investment of talking to people interested. But to flip out? I have to say a lot of older car guys are asses. Pure and simple. Not sure what gets in these guys head, but they are jerks. I say call the guy out for his shoddy car and being a d***. Personally I'm tired of over priced cars and parts. I'm also not a fan of people trying to get "matching" numbers and trying to restore it to factory specs. It is deceiving and some poor chump like me will end up buying a car because it is so original that the water hose as the right date code so it all must be original. LOL. Although many people just want it to be original, passing it off as such isn't cool. Again I think the point is not a low ball amount but the reaction.

And as for prices, a car is worth only what someone is willing to pay for it. If you bought your's for 50K and you put in another 50K and the market drops and the most anyone is willing to buy the car for is 20K, well that is what the car is worth. I bought mine for $900. I don't know what it's worth. Whatever I can get for it. Someone MIGHT be stupid enough to give me 35K but I highly doubt it. I figure somewhere between 15-20K max. But again, just depends. Maybe we will see what this particular car ends up selling for.

sorry for the rant. LOL

I had a big Mopar parts guy go apeshit when I offered him $75 for a $150 trunk lid. This happened to me about 35 years ago. The guy almost had a heart attack and I felt in danger at the time TBH. I kept my cool and just wished him a nice day. You could see the steam coming off his forehead😀 as I drove away. It was the modern equivalent of road rage.

I am VERY glad that I made the offer over the phone...

Don`t know anything about the car in question but whether it`s a car or just part if the seller wants a price I consider ridiculously high I don`t even bother to make an offer and just say something like no thanks, I`ll think about or just walk away. If I`m selling and someone makes a stupid , lowball offer I`l usually just chuckle and say NO!

Exactly....If a OWNER feels his car is worth $47K and you don't, why bother him with a ridiculously low offer ? What are you hoping for ? Other then pissing him off, why bother ?  Do you really think he's going to say...oh okay, I want $47K,  but you seem to know what you're talking about, so I'll take your $20K offer....Thanks... :crazytalk: :crazytalk: :drinkingbud:

If you think the owner is on crack for asking a price way over your idea of it's value (of his car) then move on... :alan2cents:

I get this selling parts on KiJiJi all the time....I think my asking price is more then fair....If I'm asking $100, I've had people offer $25...saying stuff like ....I have to drive an hour just to pick it up, can you at least cover my gas ? :looney:  or I can get that on eBay for less then $100... :notsure:

@anlauto because it is called negotiating a price. It's done all the time. The original post didn't say how much he offered, only what he thought it was worth. Typically you may offer half of asking value. Not sure that is ridiculously low... considering the ridiculously high price asked. lol

Been both buyer and seller at one time or another and TBH being the seller is the worst. I had my 67 Fairlane GTA on the market some time back. I've owned the car 25+ years, not much I do not know about the car. Had what seemed like a million tire kickers and lookey loo's waste untold hours. In the end I just pulled the ad and kept it. I'll be driving it to the Nationals in Reno at the end of next month.

Buying and selling can be stressful... it does not need to be and I have no idea why some people make it so hard. When I bought the Challenger I met the owner at the bank. Took it for a spin and gave it a once over. It was as advertised, negotiated a price agreeable to both.. went in the bank & had a check cut.. drove it home. Still in contact with the previous owner.

So if you go into McDonalds and a Big Mac is $3.79 you offer them a $1.25 for it ? :D

Yeah. If it was a used 50 year old Big Mac. Even if it had newer pickles stamped with the old date.

:iagree:
I know A LOT of people who have purchased items for 25% or thereabouts of asking. Never hurts to ask.....unless of course you are negotiating with a douch****.

It`s fine to negotiate but if you are going to offer half or 25% of the asking price you should be smart enough to know that the seller might get offended and/or be insulted whether it`s justified or not.

Guy walks up to me in the dark asking what I want for my car?  75K I say.  As he's walking away I think, 75 is low, I'll keep it.
