Adding a 3rd brake light to the inside rear glass?

I seem to be noticing a lot more buttpucker moments in my rearview mirror when I go to slow down to a stop, has anyone wired in a third brake light for their car to be more noticeable?

I've got one of these set ups that will Flash the brake light a few times. I'm hoping to find something that's like an interior Glass Mount at an angle so that I can wire it directly to the brake switch.

Has anyone seen anything that can just double side mount to the top rear window?

I think adding a 3rd brake light is a great idea. All modern cars have to have them. They add an extra bit of safety.

I wanted to add one to my trailer but it doesn't have a window to put it in. So I got one of these LED License Plate Frames. https://www.walmart.com/ip/LED-Lighted-License-Plate-Frame/175144351 Added 2 diodes to make it come on when ever either or both lights are lit.

Do a search for third brake light add on kit. I'm sure you can find something that will work without modifying and be removable if you decide to go back to stock.

You can also get some very bright LED bulbs for the rest of the brake lights for some added comfort.

I think when 3rd brake lights first came out they worked as intended - they got your attention more because they were new and something different we were not use to. I think now they since all newer vehicles have them it`s just another light and I bet has little effect on preventing accidents. I think with cell phones and busy lives making people rush or eat, put on make up etc. while they drive we just have a lot more distracted drivers on the road. If you want to be noticed better i`d go LED in your tail lights. JMO

I never found a third brake light that I liked. Here's what I implemented.

Not sure it'll solve any problems, but it makes me feel better.

For anyone not doing a stock restoration, adding LED tail/brake lights is one of the best safety features you can add to your car IMO.  I've seen a lot of old cars driving around with very dim tail/brake lights.  It's probably a combination of old wiring and old lenses.  I sent one of my 68 Dart tail light housings to Digitails to have them design an LED kit.  They've had it for two years.  Hopefully they will get around to it soon.

A note of interest,Chrysler was pretty innovative and ahead of its time. I've seen a lot of late 40's cars that Chrysler built with the high mounted 3rd brake light. Now here's the kicker I believe this was the only brake light on these cars. The rear fender mounted taillights were just that taillights. So obviously the engineers placed a brake light in the middle of the deck lid where they thought maybe it was more visible. Remember this was the late 40's, after that point these lights seemed to have disappeared. This pic is a late 40's Dodge with deck mounted brake light.

This is from an older thread

Thinking of installing this somewhat aftermarket 1980's period correct option for a third brake light that some put on their 1970's cars
Maybe will use the logic circuit board in it to install a different LED light although it will work with an LED bulb exchange itself

Some pictures of what's inside the box. The last two pictures of one more modern aftermarket LED light that will also work

Updating this topic..      I did this last year..

I wasn't satisfied with anything I found aftermarket, so off the the UpullRparts yard..

I used an app on my phone to find angles, so i used this on the back window of the Cuda.
I found that the LED housing on a VW CC had the right angle for the LED's to fire outwards at damn near a 90 degree angle..

I just mounted it with 3M emblem adhesive tape, I made a black decal that stuck to the inside of the glass to give it more of a finished look..
Then I added a BLP Brake light pulser..
At this point I just had it wired and trial mounted to the glass..

I had to seal up the holes in it since it was a headliner mount, I went the quick way with hot clue and textured paint since it was just for looks..
I just made a little splitter at the brake light switch and ran it down the drivers side along with some stereo RCA's..

Few pictures.

I cut the leads off of the board so they wouldn't stick out of the back, that's that half-assed hacked hole in the back side of it, I sealed that solid I then soldered on some leads and redirected the wiring with some heat shrink to protect it and filled in the holes and smoothed things out, there is no more lettering on the back side which on the Volkswagen CC would have been partially covered up by the headliner.

This thing is bright, all I see is people's faces in red behind me.  😁

There really isn't much obstruction out of the rear window..

Makes sense to add this if you drive your car in traffic. Daniel Stern Lighting has third brake-light options with various angles. I put one on my '69 cuda and plan to install on my '73.

If you don't  notice a 50 year old muscle car driving in front of you, then not sure you'd be paying attention to a third light.  :)) But maybe you are paying too much attention to the car to notice the brakelights. Don't know. A few weeks ago the news just confirmed what I said to my wife about Sacramento having worse drivers that Los Angeles. Turns out second worst in the nation. Maybe I should consider this hack.
