Starter solenoid or something else?

So, I have what appears to be a starter solenoid poorly mounted to the drivers side fender. Why? Isn't the solenoid part of the starter for a 70's 318? If not a starter solenoid, what is this? TIA

It looks like all the solenoids I had on my 65, 66 and 68 mustangs. Should it be on a 1973 Barracuda though?

Absolutely Ford! and people use them for other purposes. If that dose connect to the starter, that would be a new one on me. I see them used a lot with snow plows.

Ya, it will do the job for sure. It will also start a lot of conversations when the hood is up.
I have one in my car....in the trunk. Part of the battery relocation wiring so I don't have a live +ve wire all the way to the fender mounted chrysler start relay unless I'm starting the car.

There's fender mounted relays and there are starter mounted solenoids on these cars.
