Is there a way to test the tach without the engine running?

Probably with a signal generator or the calibration tool from RTE

@Cuda Cody does a video on bench testing gauges. Not sure if tach was on there or not. Give it a look. https://www.e-bodies.org/videos/

i figured it out.  the car at one time had a 440 engine in it and  i still have the wiring harness for that someone had changed.  So the tach wire from the coil to the bulk head connector was not there at all.  Easy fix. :veryexcited:

We ran the engine today and  the tach is now working but the number seems much higher then what its running.   the car was specked out with a pints distributor and we now have a electronic ignition system in the car  would that have any effect on it?
