Is there a way to test the tach without the engine running?

Probably with a signal generator or the calibration tool from RTE

i figured it out.  the car at one time had a 440 engine in it and  i still have the wiring harness for that someone had changed.  So the tach wire from the coil to the bulk head connector was not there at all.  Easy fix.

We ran the engine today and  the tach is now working but the number seems much higher then what its running.   the car was specked out with a pints distributor and we now have a electronic ignition system in the car  would that have any effect on it?
