Wiring kit for 70 Challenger

What wiring kit should I buy for 70 Challenger?

My restomod is going OK, bodywork is done, now off to putting it back together piece by piece. My mechanic advised me to buy the whole kit if possible, as it would be easier instead of doing every single wire by hand.

I have some friends coming over from US in April so it's a great opportunity to have them bring it over here to avoid shipping and customs charges.

I love to use M&H wiring that Year One sells for stock situations, but since you're doing a restomod it might not be the best option.

It depends on what changes you're making ? For tail lights, headlights etc...if they are basically stock I would get the correct M&H harnesses from YearOne. As for dash and engine, it really matters on what changes you're making. :alan2cents:

Well, I'm adding a Vintage Air A/C kit and new gauges, probably Speedhut.

The headlights will be stock for now, but maybe in the future I might change them for something better. I need suggestions for that, too. :-)

I am thinking of adding a modern audio system with subwoofer and 6-8 speakers (2 in the rear deck, 2 by the back seats, 2 in the front doors, 1-2 in the dashboard).

I don't have powerwindows, but it will be added sometime in the distant future.

The idea is to buy the kit and maybe add some stuff if needed, but not to start from scratch.

That looks like a lot of work compared to the stock M&H that I'm used to.

I sell a lot of the American Autowire kits at work. They really are aimed more at a restomod setup and are closer to a GM wiring setup (GM ignition switch on dash for example). It sounds like it would be easier to get a stock based setup for what you are doing (key in ignition column, stock based dash etc.).

This is overkill?

That is the harness kit I got for my restomod. Rather than modifying a stock harness to work with the aftermarket stuff, I chose to use this and wire the aftermarket stuff like it was meant to be there. With this harness you can run wiring how you want it, whether that's more stock-like or completely custom.

Like others have said it depends on what additions you are adding over the standard vehicle applications. I believe M&H is basically a plug and play which would save a huge amount of time it you are running basically stock equipment.

I am using a Painless Mopar wiring kit in mine. It has nice color and number coded wiring that mostly match Chrysler's original color codes. It didn't come with with the factory connections which I was disappointed about, you have to reuse your old ones or change to different connectors.

One thing I would say. As soon as you move away from "plug and play" factory style you are adding a lot of work- if you are electrically savvy it is not hard but there is a LOT of extra hours involved.

Ive done 2 american auto wire kits in challengers,  they use very good quality materials and they provide you some different wiring senarios in the kits ,  (ie..  powering orginal ignitions or modern setups , ac  elect fuel... or wire it stock..

You get the bulkhead complete  ..  but have to wire all feild devices ..  you will need to buy 3 crimpers (like $80) .

Im an electrician by trade so it was easy for me .  It might be a little overwelming for someone not comfortable with wiring ..

If you go that route Pm me if you need help ...

Wiring will be done by a friend of mine, he is car electrician so I believe he will manage. I'll ask if we get stuck with something...

He told me to ask one question here: can modern fuses be used with this wiring? He said that we shouldn't use old school fuses. (I have no idea about technical details and I hope the question doesn't sound stupid.)

I do understand a niche application for an aftermarket complete wiring with a custom setup. If properly installed, it can make for a slick hidden wiring look, etc.

What I do caution people that go down this road of wiring is to keep the headlights and wiper motor off any in line fuse for these circuits. Relays with headroom capacity for upgraded amp gobbling lamps is a must. However, with an in line fuse is just asking for trouble. What chance do you have for a reset, while driving at night with the headlight fuse blowing, of avoiding a crash? Answer - NONE. Make sure you have a headroom rated circuit breaker for the headlight amp load. Consider the same process for your wiper motor circuit.

Factory headlight and wiper switches did have internal circuit breakers built in for this safety that were not fused. Whether using originals switches or changing to some sort of custom switches being installed and using a larger draw amp circuit with relays, don't forget to include the circuit breakers with headroom to cover these actual loads!

Be careful. Don't get caught drinking the Kool-Aid or believing the hype.

Modern wiring kits used the plastic blade type fuses  :bigthumb:
would expect a couple of days to fully wire in ta system like that FYI
