here's a simple yet dumb question, that I thought I knew the answer to .
1971 340LA small block with stock pan, the pan holds 4 quarts and the filter holds 1, so in total that should be put into a freshly rebuilt engine should be 5 quarts right?

I drained any/all fluid out of the oil pan, car slightly lifted in front as oil drain plug at the rear of the pan, put in plug and spun on new (empty) oil filter lowered car and put in 5 qtrs.,  ran the engine....when I check the dip stick the level it is around 2 inches above the "full" mark".. wrong amount, wrong dipstick, or tube?
thoughts...

proper length of dipstick tube and dipstick from tip to hook tube base?

4 quart pan.. I'd be surprised if the filter held a pint, or even 1/2 pint... I guess it depends which filter you are running.

it is a large, large filter.....but ill drain it all again and start with 4 qtrs. then ill see what the dipstick reads at...

proper length of dipstick tube and dipstick from tip to hook tube base?
same for a 318?

IRON MAN

The 896 pages Chassis Service Manual says Engine oil capacity 4 qts and to add 1 qt when replacing filter. The owners manual says the same thing. This is for the 1973 Challenger 340 engine.

If you have purchased new (after market) dipstick or tube, do not trust the markings !!!
With stock pan and new, large filter ...put five quarts in and calibrate dip stick accordingly.

 :iagree:
Maybe just a mismatch between the tube & dipstick but it should hold 5 using a 51515 or the shorter ph 43 equivalent filter
